I am thinking of getting a new mobile phone, nothing special I just want to upgrade the Nokia 3310 I have at the moment.

I have been looking at the Nokia 3100 and have noticed that in the specification it has HTML Browser. Can anyone tell my what that means, is this a sort of text only web browser?, could I surf pistonheads on the train? Am I being a muppet?.

Cheers

It means that you can view HTML pages like this one on your mobile.

Previously you had to use WAP, which was, for all intents and purposes, shit.

Size is the obvious problem, doubt PH would be much value on a phone...

Might keep me amused on the train.

I did try to google this question and it came back with www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/dsl_prod/vrmgtsw/vr4ov/rel30/vrovdohp/06ovdogl.htm but I cant open the page.

That page is just a glossary of terms.

No doubt there are sites out there formatted for small screen HTML browsers...

HTML is the (basic) format of web pages, if you browser supports HTML, you'll see a page as it looks in Internet Explorer.

My phone has IE on it and I can surf PH quite easily. It's a bit slow though...

too much scrolling & you can't see much of the screen especially when there's multi-quoted posts

I just want a phone to make and receive calls and text messages so the Nokia 3100 sounds just what I was looking for. I just wondered what it ment. If I get it I might have a play to see what its like but like you say the screen size might be a problem. Do you, if so how do you, pay for HTML Browsing.

Sorry for the stupid questions but not come across this before

htnl on a p800 is not bad if the images are turned off. the low bandwidth versions of the bbc site etc are fine.

The data is sent via a gprs connection and is typically charged by the Kb.

Opera and my P800 work very nicely together.

Which means drunken PH posts from the bar I'm in at 3am. On the spot reporting you might say.

As has been said, data charges are by the Kb (i.e data downloaded) rather then how long your looking for. This means if you look at a lot of images it'll be very expensive, however switch off images and its pretty cheap as most of the datatransfer on normal websites is made up of images anyway.
