I think I am about to incur a ban from another forum due to me and others arguing with the site owner (he/she is being a cock)

Out of interest how do most forums ban people is it by User Name or IP?

Assuming it is by username I could just re-sign up?

I'm not saying I'm gonna get all NTB on their asses but maybe just maybe

Oh and Silent1 or Pigeon, how hard would it be for you to mess about with them?

shibby!

I got banned from mr2oc years ago.

Kinda the same thing argueing with site owner and his sponsors...... turns out i was right in the end! haha.

Anyway, it was a username ban. Then when i signed on with a different account i got an IP ban.

You can easily get an new IP from your ISP and creating a new username isn't a big deal.

Check if your ISP can change the IP and then have fun biggrin

Am a moderator on another forum, and we ban by user name, we have a list of 'dodgy' email addresses (the user names generally follow the same format), and we just go into the panel and delete/ban them before they have had time to think of a post.

We did try to do it by IP, but found that we could also knock out genuine members that way, so went back to user name banning.

Ahhh tres interesting

I normally wouldn't get involved at all but the guy is being a dick

He has upgraded the forum software over the weekend, the site is now running like a dog and it appears to be the Ads causing it

Lots of people have complained and said they will block the ads if it doesn't improve as they can't use the site

He immediately responds calling anyone who does that a freeloader and he will ban them if they do rolleyes

I did try and point out that the people who bothered registering and contributing are the ones who raise the profile of his site whether they block or not

I can understand forums not wanting Ads blocked but I maintain if the ads are causing the site to be unusable then the onus is on the owner to sort it or people will block the ads

(I hope its not someone from here smile)

Guys, I don't think we want a discussion on how to circumvent bans or extract revenge on forums. On a forum.

However, as it's a fair question I've moved it to Computers in the interests of a sensible dicussion.

Play nice or it will go though.

Thanks.

I had an issue with a forum a few years ago. I got a temp ban and once that got lifted, decided to go elsewhere.

To connect to a machine from a different IP than the one you're using, just bounce your connection via another machine. Proxy/tunnel/whatever.

rebooting your broadband router will end up with a new IP address unless you've paid extra for a static IP.

If you're browsing from work it's almost certainly static.

rolleyes

Just reply "fair point". And install the software. It's pretty obvious that if you run crap ads, people will Adblock. If I see ads I like or don't care about, I'll let them run. Take Facebook, for instance. They are relevant to my profile and quick to load. Job's a goodun.

Can they actually know if you have enabled an Ad-Blocker?

I'm not condoning the forum owner's behaviour here exactly as it doesn't sound like they are handling this well but you have to remember that forums aren't a democracy, if s/he wants to run it in a certain way and you don't feel you can use the forum with it like that then leave and find another one or even set up your own. Also in this sort of falling out why bother re-signing up? If you don't like such a fundamental thing about how they are running it (and from the sounds of it they don't want a "discussion" about it) then is it really worth the hassle of being there? Life's too short.

Cheers for all the replies and cheers JAYB for not locking it, I could understand why you would

He hasn't banned me as yet, but while anyone tries to make a discussion about it he keeps threatening it

He is intimating that the only revenue his site gets is from Ads, anyone who therefore blocks them is a freeloader and will get banned

I pointed out that many people can and do view his forums without registering and therefore the people that bother to sign up and contribute regardless of whether they block or not, are raising the profile and shouldn't be threatened as such

He reckons that contributors don't add to the site only ads

I thought that by posting we would raise the site in google ranks surely?

I have had a couple of beers and watched some footy at lunch and can't be bothered to argue with him anymore

That doesn't make sense. If he had no contributors, the site would be worthless to advertisers. Time to set up a rival website, methinks.

That's what I thought

hehe I wouldn't know where to start and its a very established festival forum so would take a lot to rival it I think

Apparently its been going for over 10 years so maybe its just his time of the month

I wasn't gonna post a link but now he has started throwing insults at people so I think he may be fair game

Although I don't want to drag PH into another 28 Days Later style war so this may get locked and I won't complain if it does it would be fair enough, but if anyone does want to see

http://www.efestivals.co.uk/forums/index.php?showt...

I don't advocate playing in any way though, honest wink
