I've got an Athlon 1800+ and a Geforce 4 4200 graphics card. Both are getting long in the teeth now and won't be able to handle half life 2 etc... in any great fashion.

Can I get away with upgrading the video card to a radeon 9800 pro and leaving the cpu as is, or do I need to upgrade both? My motherboard is pretty much maxed with the current CPU, so upgrading that would mean a fair amount of expense on top of the video card.

if you otherboards that old my gues is its only 4x agp

all new cards are 8x so new MB on the cards
i got a 9800 pro all in wonder i brort a few weeks back and It dose the job nicely

inserdently the 9800xt is only a smige faster than the 9800 pro so not worth extra cash

your cpu should handelHL 2 fine for now you could allways get a faster one later the prices are fairly cheap.

my advice nice kick ass mother board and a new grafix card for know

and if you aint got much memory another skick will help your frame rates.

I'm looking hard at a NVdia FX5900XT

Good price/performance trade off.

Ended up with...

New motherboard with 8xAGP.
2800+ Athlon CPU.
120 gig SATA hard disk.
9800pro Radeon graphics card.

That should sort the little beastie out for a couple of months
