£139 for a piece of glass 110 x 56mm
Discussion
OK have been out testing some of the works equipment today and when I got there the test rig wasn't fully set up. So, I went to sit back in the car and told one of the lads to give me a shout when it was ready.
As I got in the car I decided to put the seat back to gie myself a bit extra room to mova around. So sitting playing on the iPhone and I saw one of the lads appear in the rear view mirror, so thought instead of him walking all the way over, I'd stick my thumb up out the car door and signal that I recognise he's there.
It just so happened it was the hand I had my phone in. As I was further back than normal I punched the pillar of the car and the phone left my hand at quite a rate of knots, traveled about 6 foot and clattered to the ground.
Assumption number 1) Oh ballcocks I thought, but never mind it'll only have a few scratches. WRONG! It landed on the screen on a stone and shattered the whole screen.
Great! I rang the phone insurance up and they said it would take up to 15 working days to get the phone back to me. "FFS" I thought, what am I going to do for a phone? so argued a bit to try and get a temp replacement phone, no can do.
Assumption number 2) So went in a huff and said I'd just pay to get it done myself at the apple store, should be able to get it done in store in one day and it shouldn't cost that much, maybe £50-£70, it was £25 excess anyway. WRONG again Alan, £139
and it could still take up to 10 working days to get the phone back to me.
So I call back the insurance company and apologise with all my heart and ask them to send the forms out, think I'll just wait the 15 days and save myself £114 in the process thanks.
APPLE, you robbing feckers.

The fragile nature of the toughened glass, used on the front and back of the iPhone4, has been highlighted by quite a few users on several forums ... I believe another PHer recalled that his iPhone4 slipped out of his pocket whilst getting out of his car, which after dropping a foot at most, resulted in a shattered case back - £140 to fix/replace the phone!

I think this will be a common occurrence. I've dropped my phone several times over a 2 year period and it still works perfectly. If it was an iPhone4, I would've shattered the glass in a matter of months!

My GF dropped hers and smashed the screen, cost was the same.
The reason is, they don't just change the glass they swap the whole screen module out, as the glass is permanently fixed and can't just be replaced.
Awesome design, for something as unbreakable as glass.....
Half true, as I said on the 2g you are correct on the 3g & 3gs changing the glass is easy and designed to be easy, the digitiser is a seperate module. The reason is, they don't just change the glass they swap the whole screen module out, as the glass is permanently fixed and can't just be replaced.

Yep... my HTC touch is lobbed around daily and bounces on the floor no problems... its old and needs replacing though so I guess I just dont care anymore about it

I love reading stuff like this - it's just the sort of thing I'd do!The annoyance you feel at yourself is much greater than the cost (although that hurts too).

That's obscene.
I recently got a quote for a piece of glass for a coffee table i'm making.
800mm*400mm*10mm with 50mm radiused corners, and all the holes drilled, for £80.
So what does a I-Phone screen actually cost Apple?!
I guess you could see this as the phone equivalent of a Jaguar XKRS, and being that you can afford a £600 phone, you can afford the bills that come with ownership. This doesn't excuse the fact that the phone should be more robust, but there you go!I recently got a quote for a piece of glass for a coffee table i'm making.

Oh, and for 'Lamborghini' (Edit: There are 'Lamborghini branded phones, by the way) phones, take a look at TAG Heuer ... Christ! I was looking at them in Harrods and they were priced at around £3-4K! Strangely, I can understand the pricing of their watches, but a phone!? Not really the same
