Ahhhh....I have spent all afternoon and now evening trying to get my bloody laptop and PC networked and I am getting nowhere fast.

The PC is connected to a Netgear hub which is then connected to a Linksys thingamajig which is connected to the USB port on the laptop.
I have run Networking wizard on both and although the PC has the flashing screens bottom right to say the network is connected neither machine can see the other.
I am running a ZoneAlarm firewall on both which I have done everything with (including turning them off) so I have rules that out.
I am connecting to my Broadband connection through the PC which is working fine but the laptop can not connect to the internet (or anything else).

Please Help.

OK - check the basics first. What IP address do both machines have? To check, use winipcfg on Windows 95 or later and ipconfig /all from a shell in Windows NT or later.

Darren,

I have tried ipconfig and the screen only shows for a split second.

Am I doing it wrong?

Run up a dos cmd window then run the ipconfig, it should stay on the screen then.

Then try pinging from one machine to the other to check they are connected.

A Dos cmd window........??

Sorry I have no idea what that is.

I have been clicking start -> Run and then typing ipconfig but the box only flashes up for 1 second.

Sorry I am not even slightly technical.

Thanks for your patience guys.

No worries!!

Just type cmd in the run box, this will bring up a screen, then type your ipconfig command in there.

Type cmd in the run box then type ipconfig at the command prompt.

The PC says

PPP adapter tiscali broadband:
IP Address 80.43.170.99

Ethernet addapter network bridge:
IP Address 192.168.0.1

The Laptop says

Ethernet adapter:
IP Address 212.161.13.78

Does that tell you anything (apart from how useless I am)

The PC should have one IP assigned randomly by your PC for the net connection and the IP addresses of the laptop and PC network connections should be

192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 (or any other number between 2 and 255)

Go into device manager and select properties on the network card, then the protocols tap, then click TCIP and select properties to set the IP address.

Yep. You'll have to either manually set the laptop to something in the same range as the PC, e.g 192.168.0.2 or else set it to pick up an IP address automatically via DHCP (which should work if you've set up Internet Connection Sharing on the PC).

How you do it varies depending on Windows version, but generally it'll be somewhere like Control Panel-->Network-->TCP/IP-->Advanced

Start>Control Panel>Network Connections

Right click LAN Connection

Select properties

Click TCP/IP

Select properties

Then change the IP in there.

Right I have changed the IP address of the Laptop so that the it is now

192.168.0.2

And the PC is

192.168.0.1

Should I also change the subnet mask within the laptop too?

It did not work.

I think the IP address of the network is
169.254.89.156

There seem to be 2 network connections on my PC.

So I have now changed the IP of the Laptop to 169.254.89.157

I have also changed the subnet mask to the same as the desk top (someone else advised me to do that).

I still can not access the internet via the laptop.
I must be getting close though because when I accidentally changed the laptop IP to 169.254.89.156 I was told there was an IP conflict on the network straight away....

Ho hum....
