As per http://community.evo.co.uk/users/Harry-Metcalfe/bl... ...has anyone downloaded this yet?
I haven't got my own iPad to try it out on as I am planning to wait for the 2G version...must...resist...!

Just downloaded it. First impressions are very good, although the text is a little small to read in landscape mode without zooming. Love the fact you can now view the videos relating to the story you are reading as the links are embedded.
Can't believe they're doing it for free, well done Evo.

Interesting, given Chris Harris, Richard Meaden and Jethro Bovington's development of the Driver's Republic website. Despite working in IT and being a fan of technology, I've always been a firm believer in traditional printed magazines, because I can chuck them in my rucksack and read them on the train, in my garden, on the beach etc, and take a break from a screen (which I sit in front of all day at work). With technology like the iPad though coming out, obviously the market for electronic publications will grow. Having the same magazine in both formats seems to make far more sense to me than sprouting new publications like DR, which was doomed to failure from the start sadly.
As said above, good on Evo for producing this and for doing it for free!
Maybe in ten years electronic media will take over, but as far as I'm concerned a handover period makes far more sense than just ditching one and starting another!

Free? That surprises me, although perhaps it is only for a test period. Are there many ads?
I think DR was just a couple of years ahead of its time. If they had launched the website this year, and perhaps created an iPad app to go with it, I think they might have had a bit more longevity.

I still think that the market's too small for the whole thing to survive entirely on its own. As I said very openly when DR was launched, duality between print and electronic media (one supporting the other) would be needed for a few years until mobile technology and other print media steps up enough. I reckon around eight to ten years before something major like a car magazine could survive in digital format alone.I'm glad they've done it, but the page rendering takes a very long time, but that's something they can fix iteratively. I was actually hoping they were going to go the Wired route and have a full copy of the mag you could pay for, as it would mean I wouldn't have to wait an extra 3 weeks for it to show up here in DC.
They seem to get the idea of mobile apps, they also put out an iPhone app for Le Mans that was pretty good.

I agree- I love having a physical copy of a magazine. As said above, good on Evo for producing this and for doing it for free!

How're kids going to cut out pictures from a magazine on an iPad to stick on their school folders?!

They do take up a lot of room once you've collected them for a while- I for one had a tonne of Autocar magazines- but it's nice to leaf through them on a rainy, lazy Sunday afternoon.
Plus... I hate reading my info off screens for too long. My mind wande.....................................................

I only tried it on the iPhone, but didn't think much of it. Why anyone would choose to read it on an iPhone/iPad over the magazine is beyond me.
Even if the app had every issue for free I'd still buy the mag.
The embedded videos are a great reason to read on an ipad.Even if the app had every issue for free I'd still buy the mag.
Iirc the app is getting an update soon.

They've taken the feedback they've had and are basically re-writing the whole thing!
