Anyone got any pointers before I get home tonight and destroy a laptop through frustration.

Recently installed AVG and ZoneAlarm (on PH recommendation ) and since then, my laptop (running XP) has become slower than a tired sloth with three legs!

Was going to remove and reinstall both, but anyone got any idea what could be the problem?

Cheers

I'd say that the AV is doing a scan on everything you do. You should be able to set it to do scans each time you download or are sent something rather than a continous scan

I'd also say that AVG is slow on my machine and has recently been removed

At least my PC doesn't hang for 1.5minutes on startup and doesn't randomly crash (well it hasn't since I disabled the service).

Just an update: had a bit of a play last night, and it was indeed AVG causing the problem. I'm using the free version (tight@rse that I am ) and there aren't many options there. Even taken all options down to the minimum security settings didn't resolved the problem, so it has been uninstalled.

So... anyone know of a decent free antivirus solution that won't turn my laptop into a vegetable?

TIA

Try "Avast"..

seems to be quite well recommended, and works well on my PC.. certainly picked up a virus that Norton hadn't...
