Doh. Just tried to renew my AV subscription and was doing well until it go the the VAT part. I put in my 9-digit UK VAT no and the website rejected it, either with spaces or without. If I omitted it, they then wanted to charge me Irish VAT at 21%!!!

I've sent an e-mail to this effect to Symantec but while it's bouncing around their worldwide system for a few days (Dear Sir, you sent this to the Abu Dhabi office...) my sub will expire - so does anyone know a better way to solve this?

Buy the latest Norton AV version off ebay! My sub was due to expire and it worked out more expenisive to re-new online (and pay Irish VAT) than to get a brand spanking 2004 version with 12 month's updates included (£15.00) from ebay. This is about half the price charged in the shops.

Try it with GB in front of the number. I had this problem with a supplier too.

Thanks folks - both good ideas.

Amazingly, I've just had an e-mail from Symantec apologising for the inconvenience and sending me a subscription key - so it looks like I got a free year!

(The moral is how easy it is to go in perception from 'bunch of bastards' to 'great blokes' simply by applying a minor freebie...)
