problems with broadband
Discussion
My bro came round today and exclaimed " whats wrong with you pc?"
I am on BT broadband however some time ago now the dialup box started popping up and refusing to be "x" ed when i wanted to shut down.
This problem is less frequent now however everytime i startup the pc the dialup box comes up and i have to press connect to be connected.
Both lights are on on my bt modem and the speed seems significantly faster than i remember with dialup esp with downloads.
However he said that all i should have to do is click on the explorer icon as i should be connected allready which is the whole point of broadband.
Sadly, this whole durassic pentium 2 system has been slowly degrading since i got it approx a year ago.
Frankly i am too scarred to try messing about with internet settings for fear of loosing all connection.
Any ideas?
LOL, sadly purchasing a new pc is not viable at the mo however from the looks of it a £350 system is better than what i currently have. E-machines offering a lot of good looking deals at the mo anyone know if they are any good?, I think you can get 40g harddrive with pentium 4 celeron processor and 120 odd sdram for about £370 odd?
Anyway thanks
ian

I am prepared to be corrected here, but I believe that if you shut down the PC, Windows will issue a 'Disconnect' command to the modem, thus closing the connection which you will then have to re-establish (as you are doing) next time you boot up.
It's only 'always on' if you leave the PC running all the time as I and many others do.

Thats true although my brother uses blue yonder and when he switches his pc on all he has to do is hit the explorer icon as connection is already on with startup. I however have to manually connect with a dialup box although i am sure it is connecting to broadband, currently connected at 576,000bps.
It's no biggy just thought there may be something wrong.

I'm not sure, but it could be a dialler of some kind trying to connect to the net.
Try downloading ad-aware (www.lavasoft.de) and see if this clears it up, there is a free edition.

With BT's ADSL solution you still 'dial' to get a connection although the number is ignored (usually set to 0).
With Blueyonder I believe its a network connection through the set top box, the STB will establish and keep the line connected independantly of the PC.
If you upgrade to an ADSL router this will make the connection for you and it would work as your brother's.

Excellent
Thats the answer i wanted to hear. I vaguely remember something about setting the no. to 0 when i used £40 odd in telephone calls to them trying to set it up.
Thanks everyone for your replies.
Does anyone know if emachines are any good? some very cheap deals at the mo.
