E Mail Problems
Discussion
James here,
Lisa can't us the e-mail following a corrupt profile mooment and display driver on the laptop. The PC is working now and internet is fine however I get a ISP terminate error on the e-mail. Freeserve don't have a problem, I can get in the account on the web and if I telnet it won't connect either and it appears to try to connect on port 23 not 25. How do I force it to connect on port 25 and any thoughts on the internet eplorer.
I haven't been port mapping or anything I don't know how so I can't understand what the problem is.
Any help before she beats me up please

telnet mail.server.com 25
what's the full msg from the mail server?
W
Port 23 is the default Telnet port, if your not specifying a port, then this will be the default port used.
As for why it cant connect, it could be a firewall locally, telnet should help check if so.
Iirc freeserve are cheeky with their mailservers... wherein all port 25 traffic is hijacked to route thru their servers.
If you want to see if you can pop3,
telnet mailserver 110
Enjoy.

right telnet pop.freeserve.com 25
this gives me just a cursor at the top of the command prompt and no message. I would expect password or login etc but i just get nought.
telnet pop.freeserve.com 110
gives +ok connected to pop3 on 3003
I then don't know any commands
The error message on the e-mail is
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'pop.freeserve.com', Server: 'pop.freeserve.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F
Any more thoughts

Stick the details in here: www.mail2web.com/cgi-bin/login.asp?lid=0&il=0 - does it retrieve your messages OK?
Or when you telnet to port 110, try typing:
USER username (your own, obviously)
should get something like "+OK name is a valid mailbox"
PASS password
"+OK user exist with that password"
LIST
then should get a column of message numbers with another number next to them, the latter is the size. Can read a message with
RETR message number
or
QUIT
If it doesn't do that, post what messages you get back.

Try increasing timeout, had this problem with freeserve a couple of times.
outlook>tools>accounts
select freeserve account>properties>advanced
then move the server timeout slider to the right.
This worked for me on two occassions.
I am told there is a security issue with this so move it back to the original position when it's working.
