SL500 wiper problems.

Car is a 96 SL500 R129

The intermitant wipers do not work properly - they do half a sweep and stop, or do one sweep (to the passengers side of the car) then stop, then sometimes they work correctly.

Also, the park position is erratic and sometimes stops wherever they are when the switch is turned off.

Following advice from the mercedes oc forum I bought the new relay for the wipers (multi function - £405) and it's made not a blind bit of difference.

Anyone any ideas ?

This car is really getting me down as everything seems to take five (expensive attempts) to correct.

At least I managed to get a new aerial that worked properly first time!

I suggest trying to get a refund for the relay first followed by an hours diagnosis with a good indy to find out what is wrong.

Sounds like the wiper motor to me, but don't take my word for it, get it checked out by a specialist 1st - the motor has limit switches built into it which recognises the position of the motor & ensures that when switched off the wiper blade returns to the park postion. It could even be something as simple as a loose retaining nut on the wiper motor spindle or wiper linkage. I've know these to come loose before resulting in the wiper linkage slipping when under load.
As previously advised try to get a refund on the relay & then go find yourself a good Merc specialist who can look at it for you & point you in the right direction.
