My '06 C320cdi Estate is great. It's fast, frugal and reliable.

However, it's boring, starting to feel it's mileage a little (90k), and I no longer need an estate car

Thing is, I'd like to hold onto the things I love about the car (basically the engine and gearbox) and maybe get something more fun to drive and better looking.

I'm, rather boringly, drawn towards the CLK 320 CDI Sport. They look great and with the sports suspension, seats, and paddle gearbox would make life a little more interesting. A trip to DMS would add an extra dimension as well).

Thing is, my C Class is worth about £8500 and a nice CLK will be £16k for a car only a year or 2 newer (albeit wit 30k miles less)

It feels hard to justify unless the CLK is likely to be a much nicer (and different) car to drive

Thoughts?

Look, objectively the CLK is hardly going to be a transformation over the C-Class because, under the skin, it is a C-Class. However, it is also a two-door pillarless coupe, so subjectively it'll be stacks better! While you might not be able to tell the difference blindfolded, we don't drive with blindfolds on. It is bound to be more pleasing than the C-Class wagon!

If it were me, I'd go for the CLK 500. Unless you do a mega mileage, the fuel economy benefit of the diesel is not so great as to outweigh the sheer joy of a 5.0litre V8 (which is pretty economical for what it is). Plus the petrol car may well be cheaper to buy. Whether it's worth hocking yourself up for another ten grand is a matter for you.

What about this? It looks pretty damned good to me: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2306769.htm

Thanks for the reply

I've thought about a 350/500 (or even a C55/CLK55) but I do 17k miles a year so the fuel costs would be crippling

Besides, a mapped 320cdi covers the ground rather quickly as it it...albeit without the soundtrack of the V8

I'm tempted to wait a while, run the C320 up to 100k miles and then swap it in when it's worth c£5k....maybe for a 335d Sport as a stepping stone to a 4 year old E350cdi Coupe

My old man is running a C320 CDI at the moment. I had a drive this morning and it certainly is one helluva car. The V6 diesel is amazingly smooth (by diesel standards); and it sure has plenty of torque.

Hi.
I've got a CLK 320 CDI sport which I have had for just under a year & has been good fun to drive & look after. I'ts never going to go like a V8 version. But when you put your foot down it will shift & it's a realy good looking car.
If you get a well speced car it is a good place to be in.

If need any more info let me know.

John.
