Ok, I've got my flameproof suit on as I appreciate some people hate these requests, but without access to CAP I'd be grateful for a trade value on my car as I'm currently trying to part-ex it and I am astonished at the low bids.

Its a May 2008 E220 cdi estate (the facelift 170bhp model), avantgarde, auto
cubanite silver
37k miles
12 months MOT
FMBSH
full COMAND with linguatronic, HDD, 6 disc changer
telephone prep
parktronic
full black leather
heated front seats
rear sun protection glass
18" AMG wheels with good tyres

For any mods in this isn't a for sale ad, I'm trying to part ex it and have been told it books at £13k which is about £7k lower than similar cars seem to be retailing through Merc used approved, do they mark their cars up this much?

Webuyanycar has offered £12600, the glass's free guide suggests it's worth about £4k more than that - I know cost to change is king but I'd have thought if they're retailing them for £20k then it's got to be worth a couple of grand more than they're offering at £13k?

Thanks in advance.

Car books at £16300 + command, market is poor at pres but the car will make £15000 for a cheque.

In my general experience over the years, trade values will vary from dealer to dealer. My last experience when trading in a vehicle led to an additonal £2k in value by shopping around. I actually bought the original car I wanted from the original dealer, and traded the p/x elsewhere. I think it can depend on a number of factors including current per dealer stock etc. Just one suggestion that I've had in the past, if you have already found the car you wish to purchse, the garage may offer you a short window for you to find a better trade value, or even execute a private sale, at the end of which they will honor their original p/x valuation. Worth asking the question, as you can secure the purchase of your new car, and at least you have a worst case scenario to fall back on if you can't then get a higher price elsewhere. Personally I would call a few Mercedes specialists and see what value they'd place on the car. As said they may vary if you shop around, and if it's a good one with all the right history, and they're looking for stock etc etc. All IMO of course smile

Thanks Mark, I did think £13,000 was a bit far off, but I guess it's their starting point for negotiations.

It's going to be part-exed at a Merc dealer against another Merc so hopefully they'll move by quite a bit and bridge the gap as the car is the kind of stock I know they can sell on their forecourt without having to throw into an auction.

Cheers for the advice guys.

I'm kind of in luck that 2 Merc dealers (albeit 200 miles apart) have near identical cars in the spec I want with very similar mileage at similar prices, one has given me the £13k as a trade-in value and the other is on day off today so I'll have to wait and see what he can offer.

C250 CGI sport estate or C350 CDI sport estate - the petrol 250 is a nice balance of power (200bhp) and economy, but the diesel 350 is of course a V6 and wonderfully torquey - something nearly new where someone else has taken the depreciation hit!

The E220 CDI is a great car, and I'm only parting with it if the deal is right, but the I'm getting fed up of the 4-pot diesel engine, it's not fast or refined enough to justify it's rather low 30mpg so it's back to petrol or a diesel V6!

did you say 30mpg - is the economy really that bad??!!

I seem to recall that the combined figures for the new v6 petrol engines are around 40mpg (I think it was on the new SLK) which is excellent, if it is achievable in real life....

Whilst I'm in no doubt I won't get the book figures (who does?!), I'm hoping that by moving down from E to C Class estate, I'll be able to get a bigger/more powerful engine without getting any lower than my current 30mpg. I think that should be possible, the E Class is a heavy beast and I don't really need all of the space anyway.

of course I reserve the right to change my mind daily on what new car I want, or if I want to change at all hehe

I suspect that the colour may be a significant factor in the low part-ex offers.

IIRC Cubanite Silver is not silver but a sort of champagne colour.

It is not popular and a dealer will not be rushing to put it on the forecourt, hence the low offers.

I would have thought the same car in proper silver (i.e. Iridium Silver) would fetch at least £1500 more.

It's this colour (well, it's this car!)

It depends on what light you view it in, it's certainly not a garish "jewish racing gold"! I personally see lots of E Class saloons in this colour so it can't be that unpopular, and think it suits the estate better than the iridium silver which doesn't go with the sun protection glass IMO, and the black which looks like a hearse in estate form!

That said, opinion on colour is subjective - one of the dealers I spoke with tried to flog me an opal red C Class (think a flat pillarbox red) assuring me it wouldn't affect future trade-in value, sure it won't wink

There isn't another E Class estate with COMAND for sale with under 60k miles under £25,000 within 200 miles of me, not on Autotrader or Merc AUC anyway and there's about 10 main dealers at least within that radius - for someone looking for that car they can't afford to be picky with colour wink

Sell it privately then. If it is as desirable and popular as you think you will have no problem getting top price for it.

When I worked at Mercedes-Benz Cubanite Silver was referred to as either Jewish Racing Gold or Asian Racing Beige. It's appeal was limited to minority communities.

The E-Class was a popular car among the staff but it was rare to see one in Cubanite Silver and a key reason for this was MB restricting the supply of cars in colours with known poor residual values.

Funny that, as I bought it as an ex MB head office management car, so they obviously don't restrict the supply of them as much as you think they do.

I'm too busy with work & it's a hassle - staying in for someone who may or may not turn up, people wanting to test drive without insurance, dealing with the prospect of dodgy Nigerian bank drafts.

Trade-in is less hassle, I'm under no illusions I'll get less than I would selling privately, but when they're on the forecourt for £20k or more £13k isn't a fair trade-n offer supposing it was pink with polka dots wink

I said that cars in that colour were rare not non-existent. Over 80% of all MB cars supplied in the UK were silver or black. If a staff member ordered a car in silver or black they would get it (some blues like Tealite Blue on the 211 series or Jasper Blue on the 203 series were pretty safe). If you wanted another colour you might get it or you might not - supply was restricted because of their lower residual values.

I don't dispute that the rest of your spec is desirable but I think a lot of buyers will be put off by the colour .

I see loads of them in that colour. It seems to me about the most common after obsidian black and silver and certainly my local dealership ordered cubanite S211s into stock. Taste is a matter of taste and all that, but that colour seems to my eyes the one that most suits the car. The non-stock wheels might be off-putting, I don't know. It is an handsome car.

Nice spec but I also think the colour and alloys may be effecting its value. Tempted to suggest you flog the alloys it's got (probably worth a bit) and just stick on the standard 16" (or was it 17"?) avantgarde alloys.
