I used to own a C63 AMG but did not have any issues with the steering.

I would suggest you post the same question on the following site:

http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/

There are plenty of C63 owners on there who may be able to help.

Good luck.

I don't know much about the C63 AMG specifically, but what you are describing sounds like worn front anti-roll bar bushes or a busted steering damper. It would be surprising for such wear and tear to present itself after so few miles but not inconceivable given the weight over the front, the big wheels and the possibility that the car has been driven very hard by the previous owner.

Talk to the dealers and do a search i am sure someone else posted on this problem when the cars had not long been launched.

A local guy had one with exactly the same problem and i think in the end it was an issue with the steering column that needed tightening or something similar.
Unfortunately i can’t ask him as he is now at HMP and non contactable for the next 10-15yrs.

That's one way to fix the problem Shan. Will try the dealer first though!

I understand the knocking or loose sensation is a trait. I'm just trying to determine is mine worse than normal.

I can concur that there is a 'wobble' of the steering that I wasn't expecting from the car.

However, mine has the PPP+ and Drivers pack along with the 19inch wheels so I have put it down to the hard ride setup.

I am thinking of putting into having a suspension geometry test done to see if anything is 'out'

Not too impressed with my dealer anyway so having them look is not filling me with confidence.

On driving, the wheel seems to vibrate and as you say it feels mechanical rather than road surface induced. Was going to check the usual such as wheel balancing first before mentioning it to a Stealership.

Would be interested, if you take it further, as to the outcome.

Will let you know the outcome as I have threatened to return the car under the 30 day satisfaction period if it is not resolved. I have it at an amg centre Mercedes dealer so expect some knowledge from them.

Will let you know the outcome.
Don't hold your breath. The MB dealer here has now become an AMG 'specialist'. Seems all it involves is a 10 foot high AMG added to their external signage....

One of the 'specialists' told me that Brabus could upgrade the ECU to release more power. Ermmm no they can't. AMG does it under the Driver's Pack option.....ask Palmball..hehe

The problem has been diagnosed as a rattle in the airbag which is now being replaced. I got great service from Mercedes AMG through the process. Without the airbag in place the car is extremely tight.

Seriously?

No knocks or vibration with the airbag removed? Did they say it was an issue they had seen beforehand?

That is very ineresting! I have exactly the same sensation and have discussed it with Palmball. He was told by a development engineer that it was because the actual steering column was flexing. As such Palmball and I never persued it further.
However with this info I might re-visit the issue with my dealer.
Thanks for the info!

Thanks for bringing this thread to my attention Jack.

I will be absolutely amazed if the rattle/knocking referred to by the OP is the same thing as experienced in other C63's (including the two I had). The OP may well have a loose airbag and this could indeed cause a rattle but the characteristics I experienced could not be described as a rattle from anything on the steering wheel...in my experience, you could feel the whole steering column move....it's by minuscule amounts but it moves nonetheless. I'd describe it as a shimmy.

I am a massive advocate of this car yet this is the one thing that lets it down - and it's not even what I'd call frequent or able to be easily replicated just by driving on bumpy roads....sometimes even smooth roads with little ripples can generate the shimmy and it seems to be driven by particular frequencies of bumps.

The thing is, I've spoken to some C63 owners who have not felt this at all yet others like me and a few on here know exactly what I'm talking about. As Jack said, I even know one of AMG's development drivers at the Nurburgring who agreed it was something he was aware of in the C63. Unacceptable IMO, but it is what it is and it's no coincidence that one of the upgrades on the facelift model is

OP - I hope that whatever the dealer do, you're happy with the car. If they get rid of the problem then what a great result - if this IS the case, the could you let us know which dealer has fixed it and who the contact there is? That was one of the other C63 owners on here who do experience the shimmying problem can have it looked at by the same people and see if the problem is the same.

I notice a comment about Brabus and power upgrades! If you've got PPP then don't bother as it's right at the top of the power it can produce without some hardware changes (manifolds, cats, breathing etc). If you have a normal C63 then there are plenty of cheaper alternatives out there - Brabus charge like £4.5k for the remap and air filter lol!

Hi palmball

Not to subvert the thread, however in a nutshell what's the cheaper option to improve performance on standard c63?

Well.....cheaper may not be the word. Should I say 'better'?

Anyway, the C63's biggest problem is heat....the engine is a bit big to fit in the limited space so you'll always have trouble getting big power as with heat, also comes the ECU throttling back on the power.

The Brabus kit is a remap and an air filter for £4.5k....I actually tried this on mine to see just what the £4.5k bought you and amazingly, it provided an extra 4bhp on my car. I had the car dyno'd before and after on the same independent dyno (well it had to be independant as Merc dealers don't have rolling roads!) - the before figure of my 'unmodified' PPPcar was 507bhp (a little up on AMG's claims actually) and the after was 511bhp. I went back to Merc and got my money back.

I actually ended up getting a Carlsson remap, custom manifolds (to exactly the same spec as the CLK Black Series which were 15mm wider than standard) and 200 cell race cats done in Germany for about the same amount as the Brabus remap and delivered 536bhp but more importantly, provided and a very tangible difference.

Over here, you can get a Kleeman dealer to fit their K2 kit which comprises similar equipment and quotes a result of around 535bhp....given my own experience of changing these parts, theres no reason to believe that Kleemans kit would not be achieve the same. Kleeman are extremely experienced with the 6.2 engine so are probably who I'd trust the car to.

If you wanted to spend less, Kleeman do their K1 which is just a remap and costs around £1400....this will deliver similar output to any other remap which means around 500-510bhp.

A very good summary thanks

One question... What does this do to your manufcturers warranty. I still have over two years. Does this invalidate?

They replaced airbag and no change to the sensation. It's still there. Albeit slightly reduced. I have found that putting the steering wheel closer to the instruments rather than extended out towards the driver reduces the knocking. The extension may well amplify the sensation? Does anyone else find this?

does MB offer an extended warranty after the 3y period expires? Any hope of getting one with a remap by Kleeman?

They do offer extended warranties.

Not that I condone this but would they even be able to detect the Kleeman map?

does anyone know how much an extension for the c63 costs?
