Going to look at one on Saturday, having realised the A8 4.2 will be beyond my means.

Main things to look for?

I currently have a 2000 E39 528i so diesel is something new to me.

Cheers guys

I THINK (but not 100% sure) that this year and model, if an auto., is one of those potentially affected by the coolant in autobox problem.

IIRC, the cars with Valeo rads., which have the transmission coolant pipes running inside the rad., could suffer from coolant getting into the gearbox, which is probably not ideal!

It may already have been fixed; Honestjohn (Telegraph) had an article about it some time ago. Merc have, on some occasions, made goodwill contributions towards a replacement rad. even if the vehicle in question had not yet shown any signs of a problem.

Someone else might be able to confirm whether this model/year is definitely affected, failing that, local MB dealer could advise.

Yes it is. And rust. And SBC problems. Etc. The 2003 - 2006 E211 era wasn't a great for MB. The 2006 onwards facelift cars are reckoned to be pretty good.

HonestJohn has some pointers: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/mercedes-benz...

Just been reading up on the 2002 - 2008 E class, and until 2006 when they brought out the facelift, they appear shocking.

My E39 528i has had a few niggles but its @ 134,000 miles. I'd guess even though i average 5000 miles per year which are mainly motorway, on an 80,000 mile e270, something expensive is going to give way. I looked at this, appears very clean and full history, but i dont know what to buy now. I would want either this era of E class, the 2003> 5 series or 2004/05 Audi A6. The E class just looks so modern for its age.

I have a late 2003 E270 Avantgarde - great car.

I did read about the supposed niggles, but mine certainly doesn't have any of them - and trust me, I'm very picky.

As much as I love mine, and it's spec'd well with extras such as Command, Full Leather, 18" AMG alloys from factory - it has to make way for a 4x4.

Lovely cars, very classy especially at the money they are going for.

I've had a W209 CLK and a W203 C class with the 2.7 but not the E-Class.

The 5-pot diesel is alright but not as good as a Volvo D5 lump (IMHO) or the Audi V6s - you will find it less smooth than the M52 engine though but you'll get more torque and better MPG.

As for things to watch out for, the only ones that spring to mind are: glow plugs - they can be sods to replace (can get seized into the engine block) and IIRC, there were some problems with early models that have airmatic suspension and a real achilles' heel for MBs of this vintage is bushes and arms on the front suspenstion which don't last as long as they should - not expensive to replace but a good haggling point.
