I came across this for sale recently http://tinyurl.com/6f22hdg it puzzled me because I'd assumed 4matic production stopped when the w124 got it's midlife facelift and multi valve engines. It would seem that for the european market MB put the old 300 engine(M103?) into the facelifted cars to continue 4matic sales.
Was the system as unreliable as some make it out to be as I know of a couple forsale in the UK

3rd car down
This dealer also sold very quickly a very tidy green 190E 2.6, cream leather, aircon, under 80K miles one owner and full history for £1500 or there abouts!

It lived on in Europe. Throughout the nineties and the 2000s 4-matic was available on an increasing range of cars, including E- and S-Classes and even AMG variants. The system changed, of course. My independent reckons it is a fantastic system in the w124 and not particularly unreliable. I suspect it gets a bad press as people don't know how to fix it or don't trouble to maintain it.
