Mercs don't use cam belts, only timing chains and generally last forever. M103 6-cyl engine can have head gasket problems, check the coolant for signs of oil. Can be some tappet noise on start-up, not to worry about as it should go away after a few secs. Can idle funny- usually just needs idle control valve cleaning. Fuel injection module on back of the mixture pot can leak. ATF should be clear red and smell fresh. Rust in usual 124 places- front wings, jacking points. Buy on condition and history smile

^^^ That pretty much covers it. Also, rear window is prone to delaminating - you can often see it starting in the lower corners. Seat belt presenters can play up.

Bit thirsty for a daily driver, though?

There's a 300 and a 300-24 valve. The 24-valve is a surprisingly top-endy thing and very much out of character for a Mercedes. As a result it's lots of fun
