...because I just traded mine into MB Eastbourne, and it was actually heart wrenching to drive away from it after 3 years - albeit in a new car that I love already smile

Its a really straight reliable car, I'd love it to go to a good home where it will be polished, waxed, and have its oil and tyre pressures lovingly checked every week!

Is this a bit sad, or does anyone else find it hard to part with their old Mercs?!

What did you replace it with in the end?

Got a very good deal on an ex demo facelift C220 cdi SPORT, had to travel 500 miles for it but it was a great excuse for a mini-break!

Very impressed the new 220 cdi engine coupled with the 7G-tronic autobox. The new engine whilst having the same bhp and torque figures as the old feels like it picks up from low revs better, is quieter, has a reasonably pleasant sound (for a 4-pot diesel) at high revs, and the 7G gearbox is so much better than the old 5 speed - smoother, better pickup from standstill, great fuel economy, 55mpg on a run at 85mph (so I'm told as that would be breaking the law in this country).

IMO the facelift is much, much nicer internally in terms of layout, materials and build quality - compared to my brother-in-law's 2008 C Class it seems like a brand new model altogether rather than a facelift.

And the new COMAND with media interface is awesome, if you have an iPod and an iPhone or Blackberry it allows instant integration of everything, right down to album artwork on the in-car display.

...did I mention I love it?!

I thought so, it was the cheapest car of that type/age/spec in the country by at least £1k, had been advertised on PH for £4k more than I paid only a week earlier, and I got £1400 more in trade-in than I'd been offered anywhere else - that was without them seeing the trade-in in the metal.

I did however buy 2 weeks before the month and quarter end so I knew there would be a dealer somewhere looking to meet target, they key was phoning loads of them nationwide, and not getting put off by ridiculously low trade-in bids or unwillingness to do a good deal on the windscreen price.

Honesty from both sides was the key, I said my trade-in car was as described and promised to hand it over looking immaculate, and that if they could do the right deal I'd hand over my card details for a deposit that very same day - they said their car was immaculate as described, and that they'd do a cracking deal if I could commit the same day, no messing about from either side.

I need to stay below 160g/km and that new 7 speeder is apparently very good. Well worth the extra over the pre-face lift versions.

Does it feel like it could do 250k miles?

I always have my doubts about any modern car doing 250k miles due to high pressure injectors, turbos etc, however it does feel very well screwed together indeed and the plastics, leather, and overall fit and finish are impressive - moreso than my old 2008 E Class which itself felt as new at 40k miles (and so it should, it's a Merc!).

And that is the only long term ownership problem with Cdi's, will they or won't they cost you a fortune in PDF's, injectors etc etc!!!

If my w210 is anything to go by the engine bay fuel pipes, high pressure pump and injector seals will last 8 years or 150,000 miles. Maybe a boffin can work out whether the cost of all the replacement parts can be economically offset against the average 50 mpg it seems to have done over that length of time. The newer Merc cdi's would chuck a spanner into that equation I imagine as the prices for some of those bits are astronomic.

I'm not so sure, don't the 6 cyls have turbos, DPFs, injectors etc too?

They may be less stressed, but is the design, engineering, parts used and construction of the 6 cyls superior to that of the 4?
