Due to having a stroke, I have had to tighten my belt and have just bought a 1997 c200 with 59kmiles on it, Paid £600 for it what a value for money car, Drives beautiful and tight. Chuffed to bits. Any comments and improvements that can be made welcome.Simon

Good car & drive very well including manuals. Get the diff oil changed would be my advise, if it's an auto then also get the a/box oil & filter changed too. Preventive maintenance is key. Get the front b/joints checked and keep eye out for rust on all wh. arches and the boot lid lock area. If the engine ever starts missing more than likely it will only be a coil pack - not expensive. Enjoy & hope you recover soon.

P.s. They drive much better with a decent brand of tyres fitted.

Had my W202 11 years, and in that time have done 130,000 miles and paid out £1,500 in repairs, mainly for the aircon compressor and regassing (£1,000, but now know that the same compressor by a different name is less than half price - silly me) and two front springs. It is advisable, as already said, to change the gearbox and diff oil every 60,000. I was originally told they were "sealed for life" but then was informed that Mercedes had changed their mind on this without telling owners. You should have seen the gunge that came out of the box!

Apart from that, it runs tight and true still Happy motoring, and sorry to hear of your problems.

I have to say the W202 C class was one of the best Old school C class Mercs built. At work we run one as a courtesy car for customers & apart from its regular service items etc it never plays up unlike many of todays newer C class range (w203 chassis range) which seem to suffer from many faults if not looked after properley. It cetainly was better built than cars that followed it & is cheaper to maintain on a budget than later cars.

I really like these cars . They're honest and well put together too . The cheapest improvement is to change the steering damper ; 2 bolts and 20 quid , and it really helps stability and feel .
