2003 C Class Diesel queries

It would appear I'm having a few problems deciding which good value diesel tow car I should go for, At first the 3 series seamed the way forward but the possible big bills and engine failures as put me off. Thought I decided that one of the VAG 1.9 TDi's would be a good compromise and then a family member out of the blue offered me his Mercedes C220 diesel
its a 2003, Auto with 95k miles. Looks to be a nice spec with full leather, nice wheels and what I think are bigger brakes. The cars and aventgarde
a few questions I hope someone will be able to help with
- do the 220's have a dpf or egr valve? and if so are they reliable or can they be bypassed?
- what does the aventgarde have that the base model wouldn't?
- The cars been very reliable over the years the guys owned it but are there any general things to look out for, the cars been well looked after and serviced annually and knowing the history of car I'm buying would be good.

The 2003 C220cdi your looking at does not have a dpf filter however it does have two catalysts fitted to it. It does have an egr valve but in my experience they don't tend to play up on this particular model year. If its been well looked after & regularly serviced you should not encounter many problems.
Things to look out for that are common are glow plug light staying on, broken coil springs font & rear, poor starting due to faulty cdi injector, alternator belt juddering & rattling loudly due to faulty one way clutch pulley on alternator, leaking electrical plug on automatic gearbox, worn/split bushes on front lower control arms, worn ball joints on front lower control arms, a/c condensor radiator holed causing a/c to be inoperative. Also dont want to put to much of a cloud over it but this was around the year when the radiator could have been faulty leaking coolant into the automatic transmission fluid causing gearbox problems etc.
Sorry to go on but these can all be common problems on this car 7 you wanted to know.
As for differences between avantgarde & classic the avantgarde comes with alloy wheels, slightly lower sport suspension, better trim inside usually metal type finish & not wood. Also has leather gear lever & steering wheel compared to standard hard plastic finish.
There is the Elegance model which falls in between the classic & Avantgarde line up.
