At that time you could order Velour or Leather.

2nd hand the trade still preferred Leather but values were similar.

As above: leather was a no cost option.

Historically velours was considered more luxurious than leather, the former being soft the latter being hard wearing. I for one prefer velours.

A similar car turned up at the York Racecourse classics event at the end of September.
The mileage - from memory - was about 15,000 !!!

Needless to say the car was spectacular - but I agree - you would normally have thought leather would appear on such a model. It was also nice to see a car in a different colour - a light green metallic with the fawn coloured velour.

I think it won't be a UK car or possibly a European one at that. Possibly Japanese, that would explain it shirley?

I have just checked a December 1991 UK pricelist. On the 500 SE, 500 SEL and 600 SEL you had the choice of leather or velours and each in 7 shades, black (or anthracite for the velours), tan, cream-beige, green, blue, medium re and grey. I don't suppose many chose velours as by 1991 it was not considered very fashionable. I do recallCar had a test on a 600 SEL which had anthracite velours.

The 600 I referred to gets a bit of a mention in the Mercedes Owners magazine (yorkshire write up section) that appeared in my letterbox today. Don't know if others have received it yet - postal service seems terrible at present.

Certainly in Germany about half the high spec W126 V8's you see forsale have Velour,I seem to recall reading it was more expensive than speccing leather!

Here in the States finding a W140 with velour is akin to finding a needle in a haystack - the only ones are grey-market German imports. There was recently a 600SEL on eBay with it, but the rest of the car was a train wreck. I personally favour the velour over the leather, but again that's probably to do more with its rarity than anything....

I have had one with the velour....the quality of the cloth is amazing...As a side, I have also had a Rolls Royce with velour, that too is of amazing quality
