Retro fit Sat Nav

Hi all
I've got an ML55 and I've had it for 6 months which is a record for me keeping a daily.
It's got the standard equipment tape deck/cd auto changer but I'd really like to swap it for the Sat Nav I've seen in every one other than mine.
I've seen them on eBay for a reasonable price but unsure of how easy they are to fit.
Is it just a simple plug and play or is there more to it?

I too had the same issue as you, as in it came with the bog standard audio 20 unit, ie radio and cd player, but no satnav,dvd etc etc. I went to the comman website, but not only are the parts quite expensive, but also you need to take it to Merc to get them to hook it up on the star system.
A cheaper, and IMO, a better alternative is this product,

It really is a matter of plug and play, and took me 40mins to install into my own car. If you needed help, i am more thna happy to help. For approx £600, you really cant go wrong. If you want to see a wokring example, im sure we can meet up!

Craig, when you've typed Comman, are you referring to the Comand link I left. They did used to be able to access STAR and do all the settings. Certainly for a 55 reg vehicle as they reprogrammed the dash on my 06. Yes, I meant command down south.
I should also make clear that from my info from other Merc forums, they are able to do all of it onsite, including the star stuff.
My issue was being stuck up here in Edinburgh, I really didnt want to drive all the way to London pretty much and hang around for a day, hence why i went the 3rd party route. Also, but not top of my list, was the price difference.

The W163 ML will take a standard double din kit and look good with it.

I would look at a Pioneer F930BT, far more advanced than the Merc nav and you can set teh illumination to match the Merc interior perfectly.
Plus you get proper media features, parrot bluetooth and much better nav and a nicer/bigger screen.

I don't get what you mean? You can just buy a double din nav unit and the correct wiring kit and it takes 5 minutes to install, the slot in your car is double din already, you simply remove the single din trim and slide the new unit in.

Have you compared it with a standard Comand? We've got the standard Comand in our MY08 ML320 - I really dislike it. I'd be tempted to replace it with the Dynavin product and sell-on the Comand unit.

If you have command at the moment, you can still easily change it.
If you have a cd/dvd changer in the boot, this will no longer work. The dynavin unit itsefl has everything in it, apart from the gps receiver and the tv receiver. So it doesnt matter what was fitted before. If you wanted tv, thats the only tricky bit, as you need to get the reciever in the roof which will require trim removal. The sat nav received literally just sits on top fo the new dynavin unit and works better than my old tomtom on the dashboard.
For fitment in my car, it was so easy. Simple open the ash tray, push up and pull the two clps which remove the air control panel. Unscrew two screws and remove the whole unit (in my case it was the audio20 unit thing), then with all the cables included, it was just plug and play.Took about 40mins all in, and now i can watch DVDs, satnav etc.
I have used command in all diffeent types of mercs, and IMO, the only pro for the command is the radio interface, just seems better and easier to use. Apart from that, command IMO isnt a touch on the dynavin. You can even change the onboard satnav which is igo8, to tomtom if you so wish.

Thanks for that. The separate CD autochanger is in the glovebox. We have the Blutooth interface/charger in the central arm rest but no TV interface. Quite like the sound of that but not a deal-killer.
My reasons for wanting to change are simply that the Comand sat nav is poor - colours are all wrong for UK maps (orange motorways?) and no 6-digit postcodes.
