Having changed the wheels over I noticed the fronts were a little low pad wise. Also the disc faces are a little wavy and have a slight lip. I measured the disc thickness and it is 34.75 with a minimum of 34mm they are over 50% used up. Therefore I was looking to not only change the pads but also the discs.
It seems that the pads from MB are running at £235.44 the set. Looking on eBay I found some Brembo pads at £70.81 the set so a considerable saving. Anyone had experience with non MB supplied pads on these cars?
I believe the best approach is to disconnect the battery in the boot as the SBS can massage the discs causing the pistons to pop out, but other than that it is a fairly easy swap.

Brakes from the dealer will very likely be Pagid or Textar with a Mercedes star on them and a very expensive box, if they're anything like the parts I've bought from the dealer in the past. If you can get a reputable make like those 2 or Brembo etc like you mention from ECP/GSF/ebay etc, they'll almost certainly be same as you get from the dealer but lots less £'s.
A lot of people like Pagid but I had issues with squealing on one of my cars which disappeared when I switched to Textar, so I'm biased towards them.

That is where I got the prices from. May go for a mix of oem discs and Brembo pads and do the front now and leave the rears for a few months.http://www.mercedes-benz-parts.co.uk/

I got genuine Merc front discs and pads for mine for £300 from a Merc garage that advertises on ebay. Stratmerc2011. http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/stratmerc2011/
Its a Stratstone Mercedes dealer somewhere in the the Midlands I think ?
Worth dropping them an email to see if he still has any ?

Did you get the prices from the website or over the phone Mr. Slacker? I think they would do good discounts over the phone if you said wanted to keep genuine.A thought struck me regards the discs, if you go non OEM then make sure the bell is painted otherwise will rust over time and not look so good.

I just leave all the keys in the house.
However I was reading a thread recently where someone debunked the "SBS will chop your fingers off" theory - they tried activating the system and the pads barely moved. If I can be bothered I'll have a look for the link later.

Mine is not Keyless Go so I don't think it matters. I will disconnect the battery and keep the doors closed though.I just leave all the keys in the house.

not sure why but some of the aftermarket pads did have this problem, I bought pagid front brakes and they did squeak a lot for the first 6-800 miles (sounded like a bus at times), I tried re-greasing etc with limited success, however the noise resolved on its own accord and I guess this is a problem you can have with any new brakes

So I got some Brembo pads off eBay £70 and the OEM disks from alloywheelsdirect.net for £115 incl delivery. So £185 to do the front completely. I also have the rear pads from Brembo and will decide when I do the front as to whether to change them yet as the rears have more life then the front. They reckon they can get any Mercedes parts at a good discount.
So you can do them for less than £200 for the front pads and disks. I cannot see how they justify £240 for the front pads. My DB9 uses Brembo pads and they are great so if it is good enough for that then it is good enough for the SL.

Thay may squeal, rattle, cause brake fade and probably not last as long. This has been my experiance

I have them on my DB9 and there is no problem with the braking on that car. So what you are saying is always overpay for oem pads even though they are probably made by the same company as the ones you buy.
