C63 started sounding like a bag of nails
Discussion
Well, s
te myself this morning....Got into the C63 to go to work, a trip to Lapland with the family had meant the car had been standing since Saturday. On purpose, I left the car with as little fuel as possible. Reserve Tank message on display. To prevent any thieving scum getting too far if it got nicked.
Anywho....this morning was mild but damp so no frost etc. Turned the key and allowed everything to power up before starting her up......ohh my god....instead of growling into life and then settling into a low rumble as usual, it started up but sounded as if it was running on 4 cylinders but it was the loud tapping noise that scared the crap out of me...
Switched it off immediately and checked everything I could, oil level, water level, plug leads even the washer bottle (
just in case)....Turned the key again and the rough idle and knocking started again.......so left her running for a minute or two and eventually the engine started to run on all cylinders but the tappeting noise continued.
Phoned the stealership and they said 'can you drive it to us so we can have a look'......no Mercedes Assist? Could be later in the day apparently to attend but I needed to get to a meeting so decided to give it a drive. Cautiously, I drove up to the local petrol station and filled up with Shell's finest.
With a bit of trepidation, I turned the key and the growl was back along with all 8 cylinders doing as they were meant to, but more importantly no tappeting or knocking noise....
Could have been a serious issue but now I am presuming that I may have sucked some s
t up from the tank causing poor running.Anyway, panic over but will be keeping an ear on the engine even more closely now than previously.
No chance to get to the Stealership now until after Christmas but will have them check it over using diagnostics.....
Have a great Christmas ..;)

My C63 did something very similar, it did it once on start up and on 2 other occasions when driving, the 2nd time resulting in total breakdown. I was on the way to my local MB garage to have the problem rectified but 3 miles from garage I had a loss of power and miss firing, I thought it was going into limp home mode and I could then get to the garage but no such luck there!.
Recovery by MB customer services and 2 hrs later , car fixed , new coil required.
Drives like great again.
