Hi Guys,
I have a 2003 SL55, with numerous faults leading me to believe the consumer battery needs replacing.
1. For weeks now, whenever starting the vehicle, the consumer electrics have been disabled for the first 5-10 minutes
2. Now the central locking has failed
3. When opening the car manually with the key and driving away, the command system shut down due to the ‘car ignition not being switched on’ (although I was driving at the time)
4. The car now tells me to take it to the dealer
Would people agree it could be the secondary battery, which I believe is located in the boot? And if so, any advice on DIY replacement, where to purchase the battery, how to get into the boot while the central locking has failed, process of replacement etc?

Hi, my brother has a 2003 SL55 which over the past two years has had a never ending range of issues which are basically the fault of the second battery setup.
We haven't been able to figure out whats wrong despite numerous visits to the dealer. Consumer electrics warning keeps flashing every now and then but the car runs fine only warning lights and the batt dies quickly if not driven for a few days.
If you have any luck or more information please post.

Definitely sounds like the consumer battery. I'd suggest replacing it (it is in the boot). My Dad's SL350 had a replacement recently (circa £80) and put and end to him having to manually open the car with they key and things 'dying' now and then. Then, put the consumer battery on a trickle charger when the car is not in use. End to the problems. Well the symptoms anyway.
I am told you could also measure electrical leakage across the fuse box to identify the circuits that may be leaking and causing premature discharge of the battery. I haven't done that because I reckoned my battery dying after about a week was down to infrequent use.
My own SL55 sits quite nicely on a trickle charger and no longer has any dead battery issues.

I had a similar problem with my 2005 SL55. Luckily I had a Tier 1 Warranty because it took five visits to a main dealer before it was diagnosed as a drain on the consumer battery due to a faulty "front control unit". Not quite sure what that is but presume it is computer related.
