Always fancied a W124 so bought this at the weekend as a bit of plush to go with the TVR and the Golf.

Seems pretty straight, has had gearbox rebuild and headgasket done within the last 20k. Temp and oil pressure were stable and strong. Couple of rust bubbles, but nothing too serious for the price.
Anyone got any experience of the 230 engine? Am used to looking after the Chim so happy to get involved, always good to know what you are listening/looking for!

Nice looking car. The M102 engine was used in the 123 series as well so it'd been around for a while when they put it in the 124. It's quite a good peppy engine for a four-pot, it has a single-row timing chain though instead of double like later engines, and is a bit more well known for failing- a friend of mine bought a 230ce and the chain went about 2 weeks after he got it. So if it's not in the history I'd say budget on checking/replacement.

J-reg will be a duplex chain so wouldn't worry about that. HG's can seep oil into the water, but you say thats done. Autobox going is rare. sometimes they can flare but thats cheaply solved with a little spring with the pan off (IIRC).
Look after it and it will go on forever, sounds a great buy!
- If you want to mess around, diff oil & whip the cladding off and clean up underneath

Tyres can change everything on a W124. A set of old Pirellis or Goodyear NCT5s will be noisy, harsh & unpleasant and offer little grip. A soft tyre like the Continental will be quieter, grippier and will improve the ride
The tyre is effectively the softest spring on the car so, compared to a modern car on low-profiles with shallow, stiff sidewalls, it has a disproportionally large effect on the handling

didn't realise they'd changed the chain during the engine run- my friend's 230 was a w123.
