I have been offered a 07 reg car with 54,200 miles on the clock, superd condition inside and out, top spec and in my prefered enterior choice.

Having driven the car I have to say despite having less torque than my CLS 55 the bigger naturaly aspirated engine does not seem to be any more forgiving even at low revs, acceleration was unbelievable and the noise was also great. Louder than the 55 for sure.

I have been offered the car for 25,000.

I wasn't thinking of changing until late spring, and the plan was to get a C63, or something more exotic, but the CLS 63 in question is a very nice car and has impressed me enough to consider it.

My worry is depreciation as I would not keep it for that long, and at 25k it is not anywher near the bottom of it's depreciation curve and will I'm sure lose a lot of money.

Does anyone know current trade value for one of these?

What would you consider a very good deal for a car of this age and miles?

If I sold within 12 months any idea what I could expect to get from a dealer, assuming a straight sale no px?

why change the CLS55 .. will the CLS63 be that different.

If you want slightly louder on the CLS55, take out the rear center silencer -- not sure if this link will work: http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/engine/116466-fitti...

I wasn't planning to but after seeing and then driving this car I am tempted as it appears to be well priced, is immaculate and could be a good stop gap.

The plan originaly was to get a C63 but as a really nice one with PP is 30k+, a CLS 63 at under 25k could be a better solution if I am only keeping it for a year or so and then hopefully trying something different (granturismo s or 360). after 3 amg's in a row.

CLS 63 vs CLS 55- quite surprising, the 63 felt a bit more responsive. Both very very quick but the 63 felt that bit more dramatic when driven hard. It is also a bit more thirsty it has to be said.

Can anyone give me an idea of possible depreciation on a 63 over 12 months, or know current trade values?

Would you consider 25k good value for a 2007 car with 54k miles (black, top spec, mint)?

BTW- Thanks for the link, sounds interesting. I am not that far away from the company you mention so if it's only a few hours work it could be something to look into.

I was also considering tunning my cls 55, apparently 520 bhp and good torque increase are realistic figures, the supercharged V8 supposedly has good tuning potential. Just not sure if the cost of around £1400 would be justified, not sure if there is a noticeable enough different.

probably because the 63 has the 7 speed gearbox, it feels more responsive.

the place I used will be able to do much quicker for you as they learnt it on mine.

do the silencer removal and see what you think.

the 55 and 63 won't be easy to sell, as no one wants big petrol V8s anymore apparently.

what is the cost to change from 55 to 63?

Cost to change would be around 7k-8k assuming I buy the 63 for 25k.

I would like to get an idea of what a garage would pay for a cls 63 in todays market, would help me to decide what I could potentialy sell for, but also how much under 25k they might sell the car for.

Your right about the market though, so many 55's on sale for 6 months at least, a few I can think of on sale for close to a year and still unsold.

63's also slow to sell, but under 30k list price they were untill recently less around for sale, that will probably start to change now.

Not having owned either of these cars, but having been in the situation of changing cars quite frequently, i think you need to appreciate what the total cost of change would be.

I would assume if you kept the 55 for another year, the hit on depn vs that of purchasing the 63 and then taking the hit on that come pirchasing of a c63, would be far less in IMHO. Effectively, you'd take the hit twice with the 63.

I would look into tweaking the 55 to respond like the 63 and when you do come to sell, remove and put back to normal and sell on the parts - there is a market for used merc tuning parts.

Either way, a great situation!!!!

Forgot to add, try vauxhall.co.uk used car valuation function for rough idea on trade values...

Thanks for that, tried the site you mentioned and apparently the January 2012 cap value is just 18000-18400.

If that's the case it certainly looks like a lot of the cars are overpriced, which is probably why they are not selling or selling extremely slowly and for a lot less than list price, dealers obviously want big margins on amg's which in this market are hard to achieve.

As much as I enjoyed the cls 63 looks like it might be better to keep the 55 and look into tunning it.

they need them to protect themselves as they either keep the car for ages, or they have to discount big time.

No problem - i find it easier to advise others but difficult to be objective when its my turn! Good luck whichever you choose, lovely cars!

I wouldnt pay too much attention to the valuations given by the vauxhall site. It valued my 2007 BMW E61 M5 Touring with 45k on the clock at £23k. Thats what id expect in return as a trade in, not a resale value. £27/8k is more where the car should be given condition and spec.

They phoned me today in response to my initial enquiry:

After explaning i only did the valuation quote as a matter of interest and did not want to sell the car they said this, 'due to our high demand for used cars it seems we can offer you more than quoted sir!'

Proof that online valuations are BS.

FWIW I think you should go for the 63. Its a newer car, possibly easier to shift in the future and the engine will be more fun as its N/A and higher-revving. I've only owned a 55 amg engine but I have driven a 63 and given the opportunity I will be looking to buy one in the future also.

Modding the cls55 is reasonable but you will be taking a risk as things can go wrong, the 55's weren't the most reliable so not a good base to start on. Good luck with whatever you decide, its a nice dilemma to have!

55 Kompressor engines are pretty tough .. they don't go wrong.

The figure of 18400 for a 57 cls 63 amg as a trade value seems accurate to me, despite that site not allowing any detail on spec or condition. Even if a higher price is assumed for a top spec car in black, and mint condition it would not be over 19500.

Dealers are pricing 63's around 26k-28k, no doubt selling with big discounts as these sorts of cars are not selling at the moment so they are probably letting go of them for 23k-25k.

Seems like holding on to the cls 55 for the moment is the best thing to do as I would not keep the 63 for longer than a year and with that in mind buying now at around 25k would see me losing a lot of money in a short space of time, for a minor upgrade in performance. Idealy I would like my next car to be something I hold on to for a while, hence why I am looking outside of amg's as well.

Generally the market for cls 55/cls 63 is quite odd, and I'm not sure I understand it. Neither car is expensive considering what it offers in performance, comfort, style, yet there are several cars which were for sale when I bought mine almost a year ago that are still for sale now! They have been reduced more than once, no doubt are available with a decent discount off list and they are unsold for a whole year?

It's not like there are that many cars for sale either, exactly the opposite, if you exclude cars with very high miles and poor colours, you are left with quite a small selection.

The cls 63 I test drove has itself been for sale for 5 months or so and I was told in that time it has attracted very little interest.

Is the market really this dead?

I know these cars are feel good purchases and confidence in the economy is important for them to sell, but still...

It's not so much a dead market just a buyers market on spades.

Buyers now want the exact car at the best price - anything less stays unsold.

a bargain for potential buyers but used amg's are always a struggle to shift. Mostly running costs are the issue - parts can be very expensive. Fuel economy is also poor. I've noticed that some dealers are asking way too much for their amg's and I have also noticed cars not selling for months

I would only buy the CLS 63 if I would keep it - and there might be a reason - as the future for big, na high reving monsters seems sadly gone... frown
imo the 63 has more classic potential than the 55 (although this would make another interesting thread)
if you want to sell in a year just keep what you have (but keep it original as it will sell better)
Tuning is also only worth for keepers
