Rusty wing on W124

Common problem I know but whats the cheapest route to make good. I see you can buy cheap wings on fleaBay but then there is the cost of someone painting and fitting (how much) etc or do I get it repaired or is finding a 2nd hand one an option (assume most have rusted away too though!)?

How bad is the rust - replacement wing bad / weld a new piece of metal bad or sand blast bad?

New wing is the only way to keep it at bay for more than ten minutes. The cost is in the labour and painting and these are the same (or more) if you're merely repairing. A new Merc wing is £200. A cheapo from EBay is £50. A reasonable compromise might be the Van Wezel pattern parts supplied by German SPOB and probably Andrew Page motor factors.

Probably not, really. The fit may not be perfect and the edges, especially where the top of the wing meets the indicator at the front and the windscreen pillar at the rear, will be less than perfect. The kind of thing only a total OCD nerd will notice. Corrosion resistance is all in the preparation and painting.

I have a cheap pattern wing on my currently defunct 124 and it is not the end of the world.

I've just come across these people. No idea whether they're any good but they're cheap enough at £42 for a wing.

Since seeing the earlier posts have been talking to my local bodyshop (recommended to me by the local merc specialist and has a 107 in bits inside being worked on and 124 outside waiting for a waxoil) he reckons some of the cheaper bodyparts don't fit that well and the materials used don't match the quality of OEM parts. Though willing to try he suggested sticking with the original items if treatable.

He seems fairly confident the he can sort minor rust problems out by sandblasting / cutting out the rusted section & inserting a new piece. My 124 is booked in for a few minor rust spots so I hope he knows his stuff!

That said, he did say if the rust turns out to be too bad then he'd put a new wing on.
