Mechanically it'll out live you, they're not quite as refined as the later CDI engines but still make great cruisers. As with any W202 you just need to have a good dig around for corossion. If it's solid then it'll be a good buy.

I had one in estate form for 5 years. Traded it in for a W203 C270CDI. Wish I'd kept the W202!

The only things that went wrong with it in the 110,000 miles that I put on it were a water pump and glow plugs. Apart from the tin worm in the front wings and in the tailgate.

With regards to the dreaded rust in the wings and tailgate, Is it easily treatable?

Is it just a case of treating the localised rust or is it more serious than that?

What's the going rate for fixing it?

Depends how serious the rust is. If it's just surface rust then easily treatable.
If not maybe cut out and replace or just replace whole wing.
For prices I would ring around local body shops and get quotes.

Has anyone any pointers to real world MPGs on these with some miles under the belt ?

I might start a long commute soon, I could be tempted too.

I got about 38 out of a auto saloon with approx 200k miles on it, curiously the later estate with under 100k managed around 33. Although I wasn't doing so many long runs in the estate.

Cripes, I get 55-60 out of my Focus dull machine.

Yeah mines doing 37-38.
Bear in mind you are on old school technology and feeding 5 cylinders as opposed to 4.
Also, because it is old school tech, you can run it on anything that burns. Ie veg oil and all that good stuff.

Great old cars these. I had one brand new back in 1998. Run it up to 90k over two and a half years. It was faultless and returned 38mpg, great compared to the 26mpg the previous C180 was returning.

I've had fancier cars since but still think back fondly to the C250.
