I can only speak for the E63 AMG, but its a fantastic bit of kit. Sadly I think the lightweight build quality lets it down... but I suppose it was designed in a world wide recession. To be honest you could put that 6.3 in anything and it would be magical. I personally would go for the C63, or even the CLS63 (if not the obvious SL63)... but they are all governed to the same performance spec, so its just down to looks really.

will need the space - E and even then tight but as a backup car for me and work may be a fun option.superlightr said:

I've been in one of these (a 2007 model) and they're an exceptional car - it won't have the planted feeling of an Audi RS6 for example, but that makes it more entertaining in my opinion. I guess it depends on whether you want to have a bit more fun on your journeys or make quick but undramatic progress (in which case, consider an Audi).had an E39 M5 and the porkers etc but never an AMG.
I'm a big fan of the E39 M5, the build quality is fantastic (better than the Merc in this case) and it's great to drive a car that isn't too overloaded with technology. The E63 is similar in some respects, there aren't many gear settings, you can have full manual control over the gears (it won't even change up when you hit the limiter in manual mode), it sounds great, but it's also a relaxing car for everyday use when you don't want to hoon around.
Fuel consumption - 12mpg around town and best I've had in my CLK63 is 24mpg on a motorway run sticking to speedlimits but having a little bit of fun where appropriate.
Servicing costs - I haven't been through this yet, consumables will be more expensive but the engine doesn't need as much attention as the BMW V10.
Insurance - surprisingly reasonable for such a high performance car!
After reserching I of the view that its got to be a DB9 09MY for me. Went to have a look at a 09MY at Chichester today £60k good price on my px, nice guy - very tempted but then had also booked in a drive in an 1 yr old E63 AMG estate - I am ashamed to say that my faith has been shaken.. what a package for a car. Left home thinking its going to be the AM and job jobbed but now the AMG looks very tempting.....
Will see what sort of deal both can offer although suspect the DB9 is at the best price its going to be at and there is room on the AMG. More E estates AMG are coming on by the week.

Truely brilliant car, much prefer mine to past E60 M5 and RS6 V10 avant. Most are ex MB cars and loaded, however worth seeking out one with 'luxury' leather as this is a nicer grain of leather (nappa) and there is more of it (dashboard, doorcards. etc) plus alcantara headlining, which combines to boast the interior ambiance. Also need the AMG diff for roundabout amusement. Really great car, brimming with charisma and ability. Love mine.seawise said:

Thanks for the reply. The one I drove was at £63k with nappa, dif, rear entertainment, the full monty as far as I can see. The only issue is that over the last 6 weeks the numbers on the MB site have gone from 3 ish to 10 - 12 ish with the cheapest was at£60k reduced to £57k with rear entertainment (not nappa) but most are still nudging £60k but due for a reduction even with all the bells LSD etc so feel the one I drove is about 3k over priced and unless they can do a deal sooner rather than later , I think if I wait a few weeks until they will go under £60k but with still a bit of room for negotiations. They certainly are not shifting them at the moment above £60k.Funny I went from certain I would get a DB9 and out of duty having a drive of the E AMG thinking it will be ok but nothing to light my fire - but the looks, feel and whole packet blew me away - the MB dealer could not have been more helpful or polite - very nice customer service.

yeah, i paid £58k for a fully loaded example (everything bar rear seat entertainment and ceramics, £89k list) from MB direct 6 months ago for a 7k miler in black -- they are offering some pretty good leasing deals, that limit your exposure to slightly less than the anticipated depreciation over 2 years. of course thats still a lot of money to burn, but any car of this ilk is impossible to justify in a rational manner. i've got plenty of other toys, but the Merc gets more use than i was anticipating, not only is it the ultimate daily driver but it's also a lot of fun to pedal as well.Edited by superlightr on Tuesday 1st May 09:01

The E63 is an amazing machine, I have just moved upwards from the C63 having being lucky enough to have previously owned M5's E39 and E60.
the C63 is a more focused machine that you feel much more part of, personally I feel the E class is more a Luxo barge with much bigger feeling and presence on the road.
Performance is obviously great in either apart from the fuel economy!!!!!!
One thing to note is that Mercedes are offering fantastic finance deals at present which put me straight into a brand new Bi Turbo for almost what I was paying for 3 yr old C63.
New car is on a spirited cruise getting top 20's after only 1000 miles so I feel it is much better than the old "rip up the tenners" feeling when you floored it in the normally aspirated car!!!!!
There are plenty of cars around now in 6.2 guise the performance pack IMO is a waste of time on the new car as it's a lot of money for only 30bhp (and similar tq) and bits of carbon (saloon only) the LSD is a good bit of kit but a marketing dream!b
A simple remap and exhaust soon to come on line from companies will give upwards of 100rwhp (supposedly) which makes the car much easier to tune if that's what your after.

Brilliant cars,I only tested the n/a version but was blown away,I've always been an BMW m car type ,I owned an sl55 briefly ,I could never gel with the constant traction issues ,I drove an e63 on a soaking wet day ,it was superb,so much so that now I would not even contemplate a 'm' car if I was buying a high performance saloon,the merc had so much more feel and character.
The n/a engine is a true great ,consumption is woeful ,but it is a masterpiece.

Was/am getting close to a deal on a E63 estate - just the wife holding things up. Doh
A C63 is too small although love the looks and sound - We have 3 kids etc and I do like the big luxo look as well. Not worried about fuel - like the stealth look but its the sound - oh boy what a sound when you floor it.
That did it for me together with the sublime smoothness of the ride, napa leather on my head - you know what I mean - I was blow away by the whole thing. Went there thinking nah wont like it with low expectation having set my heart on a DB9 but as PH rave about them thought I would have a look. It felt a lot moved on from my M5 E39 but that was 10yrs or so ago now and my head did start thinking the DB9 although nice would be a risk on the outlays both deperciation, servicing and colour combi I could afford.

Thank you - good to have as much perspective as possible. Thats another thing putting miles on the DB9 is so cost sensitive whereas the AMG I would not worry about also it has a much lower miles to start with and 3 years younger as well.The n/a engine is a true great ,consumption is woeful ,but it is a masterpiece.

I still think the DB9 is great looking - and some of the later modles ie 10MY has active suspension ect but I cant afford those. A 09My is very nice but not there on the gadgets/comfort. -and streatching the cost to get a average colour combi and 'basic' kit albeit a nice place to sit. But as you said the servicing and deperciation is not normally an issue for me but as they are so huge for a DB9 and for a 4 yrs old car has to come into the equation. My work would mean the car going to all sorts of places and a DB9 would stick out as well as putting on the miles.Sure a E AMG depreciation will be up there but I wont worry if I can get the milage on it and not worry - also Im more confident it will start each and every morning and will have no issues with QC or getting things sorted if they go wrong. The family can also fit in the AMG.
I though my 996tt stuck out and got negative comments from clients I can only imagin what a DB9 will look like outside.
Ive talked myself out of the DB9 - heart is down but head thinks its been a lucky escape ! hardly a bummer to have a E63 AMG. Just need to get the wife choped up or to agree and we are there.
