I have to say I dont know much about this model - but I do know that people very much highly regard this model in terms of reliability and the last of the "real Merc" and certainly is a great buy at that price !

It may not be a top colour choice - but that aside - if its the same in the flesh I wish I had somewhere to park it. A bargain and surely won't be around long.
I had a test in one 15 years ago when I settled for a smaller W201. The 2.6 is regarded as one of the nicest.
And I prefer the pre facelift body compared to my newer S124 - especially the bonnet. It appears to lack cruise, which I have got very used to. You can't have everything.

Actually I think the colour is a major attraction, so different to modern colours, and 'of its time'. Would make a nice partner to a 1996 E320T in Tourmaline green don't you think?

Well, as you mention the other one - yes.

It is very nice but I would haggle hard on the price. The saloons are less desirable than the coupes and estates. They always need best part of a grand to sort out all the niggles when you buy them ( unless you are handy and doing the work yourself) so factor that in to negotiations but after that will run and run. I cannot see a time in my life when I will be without a 124!

Im loving tourmaline - but I would say that as mine is too.....

I love these very early cars with grey plastic bumpers and without the Sacco panels and functionless chrome detailing. They look slimmer and more refined than the later cars to my eyes. The saloons may well be least loved but that makes them the coolest: and there is something very luxurious about a well-sorted saloon. You're right to set aside a grand: at 25 years, they will need all new under carriage, bushes, links, shocks and springs, but it's worth it. My E300 D T should be ready soon: it has had new everything!

I agree that the saloons have a certain something about them - I plan to have a 500e at some point. However the rest of the world don't know this so prices are lower. Hence the haggle hard comment

Really starting to miss my 300TE. I wanted the later interior with the wood trim and I wanted leather, and I fancied the colour - and I can't deny that the engine in the 320 is sublime - but I miss the simple unadorned looks of the earliest cars. As is so often the case, the originals of any model of car are often the best. And to think I had to let the 300 go for a measly £1000, which is probably what I'm about to spend on making the 320 100% right; that just seems wrong somehow.

Even the wife, who has absolutely no interest in cars whatsoever (unless they're tiny and brand new) said "why don't you just keep it?" - but it seemed daft to have 2 w124 estates. As Biglips said above, I can't imagine not having a w124 of some sort.

It was on Car and Classic at £2350, but I see that ad has now been replaced with one at £2000. Still prefer the interior of the £1595 one though, despite the attractions fof the velour.

Check this out at £695. I am going to Swansea tomorrow. I have no money. I have no need of yet another shonky old Merc. And I will have a car with me anyway. But this looks really nice. Original number plates but new wheel trims. Wonk aftermarket parking sensors and hideous, utterly hideous jukebox.

Marvellous for the money. OK it's only a 4cyl (but it shouldn't be dismisssed for that alone) and it has the issues you describe, but for £695 it deserves someone to take it under their wing. I'm glad I'm a flight and a ferry away from these cars!

That car at £695 is being sold by trade according to the ad. How the hell can you sell a decent car for that money and make a profit on it?! Even if you only wash it & advertise it there's probably no money in finance (I'd hope at £695!) so was someone robbed when they bought the car in?

I often wonder about that when I seep a cheap car at a dealers, especially if it looks half decent. Maybe it's not the sort of stuff he usually sells and just wants rid asap? Maybe he got it in PX for something much more expensive and gave such a poor PX for it that it owes him practically nothing? Maybe it's a heap of junk in reality, who knows? If it was anywhere near me I'd sure as hell go and look at it though.

I didn't dare go to look at it, even though it was only five miles from where I was this morning. It's even taxed for goodness' sake! I guess that a 4-cylinder, petrol, early w124 with zero spec, gold paint and brown cloth upholstery will be unloved in the market place. I would love it. These utterly sparse 124s have huge design integrity.
