Went to drive an SLK350 today at a local garage. I had another couple of test drives arranged but took it out for 20 mins and bought it on my return. Loved it - obviously. Colour, which helped convince my wife, was described as mink.

I pick it up next week, once the bank lets me have my money. I've been given the three handbooks, one with 300+ pages and the medium one with just 250.

Can't wait.

Given that the power is given as 280bhp the performance was a bit less than I expected. I've driven a tiptronic Porsche (I've got a back problem and find it difficult to declutch) and the kickdown was worse than turbolag. The Merc change was much better.

Brakes felt a bit dead. Is this normal. They stopped superbly but they lacked feeling.

So I'm quite excited.

I'm a little surprised that you found the performance less than expected, but then if you're comparing it to a Porche, maybe it is. I have a SLK320 which of course is less powerful than yours and I find the performance superb, but have to add I really don't have a fair comparison. Are you sure the car is 100 per cent mechanically sound ? Don't know what you mean about the brakes.

Great choice! I'm on my second, I absolutely love them. For me, nothing bridges the divide between refined comfortable coupe and open top sportscar so effectively. I love the fact that I can do a six hour round trip on business in effortless comfort one day, then drop the top and have a fun drive the next.

Regarding performance, mine is a 3 litre (it's the previous model) V6 auto. 0-60 is about 6 secs and it's limited to 155mph making it comfortably the quickest car I've owned. However it's so damn smooth that it doesn't feel it! It's only when overtaking trucks on an A road that you think "wow, this is actually quite quick!" definitely more refined GT than raucous racer.

350 is a great car. Sold my 200 to get it 2 years ago and still the performance in mid range is amazing. The dead brakes are indicative of gentle usage by previous owner if discs and pads are ok. Check www.slkworld.com. There is an active UK section with meetings etc.
