AMG E36 originality

Hi all,
I'm going to see an E36 AMG (W124 - from 1995) this weekend, with a view to buying it.
I've been doing a bit of research on the car - and when I put it's registration number into an insurance website, it tells me it's an E320, not an E36.
Does anybody know if E36s all left the factory as E36s (I assume so, given different engines, etc), and if so, what's the easiest way for me to tell if I'm looking at a real E36 or an E320 that's been tarted up to look like an E36?

The 124 cars with the 36 engine started life as standard 320's modified by AMG , so will register as the original car .
Documentation supplied with the car will confirm it's provenance .
I'm sure the internet will confirm the exact spec , including the little things which anyone forging one would forget .
A specialist such as Avantgarde , or the Mercedes club could help , and most dealers are happy to give a free spec printout if you supply the chassis number

They did all start life as E320s but mine comes up as an E36 on any online databases. Beware a later conversion toE36 spec. of a standard E320. Not a bad thing in itself but price should reflect this non originality. I know that there is at least one very good conversion out there which would be difficult to identify without quite a bit of detective work. Ask for the VIN and someone on here will probably be able to check this for you. Does it have E36 embossed on the gearlever? Should have. Do you have a link to the advert as I might be able to tell you if it is the E36 conversion that I know of. Pm me if you need any other help

A Merc expert I know has had a look and thinks it's the real deal.
VIN is WDB1240322C187546
and it has option 957 - AMG technical package.
It comes up as an E36 on the HPI check, as well as a few other insurance sites where I've tried to get a quote - I was just surprised when I found out that it was quite difficult to identify which is which. The car does have an E36 gear lever (or so I believe).

The car you are considering is indeed the real deal.
The owner posts on MbClub.co.uk and is well known in E36 circles. Goes under the name "Pringles", IIRC.
The car is high mileage, but is extremely well cared for. Mechanically, it has had all the usual M104 engine jobs done, AFAIK.

Thanks to everyone for their help on this - but in the end (hang my head in shame), I've decided to be sensible and not buy another car... I live in London, don't have parking without renting a space, etc., etc., and decided that my cash is probably better paying off a chunk of mortgage. I'm not sure if I'm more sad because I don't have the car or because I've realised that I must be getting sensible and middle-aged...

TBH (and at the risk of talking down the value of my car!) I don't think these are investment grade cars. They will appreciate a little and you will have a lot of fun owning one but nothing more than that unless you can find a real garage queen/ low miler and mothball it - but what is the point of that?That having been said , I wonder how much the E36 will be worth in ten years from now ....
