I fancied a a challenge and after correctly deciphering the VIN number from the label in one of the photos I couldn't get anything useful out of the Mercedes EPC system. But I then found this webpage that has most of the option codes:

http://web.archive.org/web/20050807084950/http://w...

470: ABS brakes
506: ?
532: Electric aerial
543: sun visor with illuminated mirror
570: front armrest with box
584: electric F and R windows
591: heat insulating glass
600: headlamp wash/wipe
611: courtesy lamps in doors
640: alloy wheels
682: fire extinguisher
812: rear speakers
873: heated front seats
877: reading lamps in rear

It really shows how basic the standard equipment was on Mercs in those days!

But in that era almost every Merc that came into Britain had things like electric windows and PAS.

In Germany however, it was common to find both Mercedes and BMW in absolutely standard trim.

I remember taking in a left hand drive 280E in a trade-in that had been brought back from Germany. It had manual steering, a 4 speed manual 'box, wind up windows and no stereo!

It was an absolute fying machine however, and I ended up using it for a while.
