Glitchy Gear Selector W210

Hi, Looking for a spot of advice please. The gear selector on my 2001 E320 CDi isn't telling the truth with regard to which position it is in.
This is making starting a problem, as with the stick in either P or N, the indicator on the dash usually says it's in R or D, and the car won't start.
With some cycling of the ignition and jiggling of the selector, it is possible to get it to start, but usually one or two minutes faff. Once started, it works fine.
I've dismantled as far as unscrewing the selector module from the console, but no further. Does anyone have any advice please?
