Old C-Class AMG Alloys compatibility?

Hello, I have one of these (98 c240 sport);



..and while I like the stock alloys, I would like to update it a bit (or 'chav it up a bit', depending on your point of view) by fitting some 17" AMG wheels in this style;

However, the wheel compatibility guides say they won't fit. Can anyone tell me with any certainty why this is the case? I presume the stud PCD is the same, so maybe an offset/ inset interference? If so, could it be solved safely with spacers?
