R107 SL500 Boot Springs

Hi,

I have recently acquired a 1984 SL500 and the boot springs seem to have gone, so the boot lid is completely unsupported.

Does anyone know if this is a common fault and what kind of job a repair is? I have removed the boot carpet and rear bulkhead so I can get to the hinges but it isn't obvious how the mechanism works, any advice greatly appreciated.

Off the top of my head a b***** of a job, the boot spring is a twisted `torsion` bar arrangement running across the width of car requiring fuel tank removal, this from memory so don`t quote me, can find out 100% later on if that helps?

Hi, thanks for the info. I spoke to the SL shop who said pretty much the same thing. Sounds like the type of thing I will just have to live with.

Hello, i have had to change a couple of these on my sl's, i have not had to remove the fuel tank.

the torsion spring is not that expensive from mercedes and with the help of a friend you can do in within an hour

Thanks for the info. Do you have any tips/advice on how to affect this repair? Perhaps if I order the part from Mercedes it may become more obvious how it fits together.

You have to remove the panel in the boot, then fit the rod(spring) in one end then twist it about 180 degrees. from memory we used a small jack handle to twist it. please be very carefull as it is under a lot of tension. good luck
