Service Brakes - warning message
Discussion
Hi, got this message coming up on my 2005 E270CDi, 74k miles, I've now found out what it is and the astronomical cost it might cost to repair. I've had it downloaded and its saying that it requires to be reprogrammed which I'm going to try. If the reprogramming doesn't work what are the chances of Mercedes replacing via warranty, car has FSH although not all through main dealer. I've seen on some blogs where this has been the case but heard that Merc have stopped this.
Thanks for any help, I thought of changing it last summer and with the trade in prices being offered it will cost half what the cars worth to replace the SBC module!!!

I had this problem (I had EVERY problem!) with my 2002 R230 SL. Car was FMBSH from new, money no object spent and MB replaced the SBC for free in November 2010. Edited to add - my car didn't show any errors, MB rang me up when it was being serviced and told me that it had come up on STAR and that they would be doing it.
However I am aware that they are refusing to cover this now - and as you state, OP, the cost is outrageous. I suspect that in another two years this will be effectively writing the cars off and within five years or less we will be seeing flagship models like SLs being written off.
Shocking bit of design IMO.

Please give me you chassis number, and i can put through the request to see how much contribution you'd get (as i work in Mercedes Warranty).all SBC first say to be reprogrammed first, but if that fails then the replacement of the unit. Also on the print out you have (if official) it should say the damage code. Thanks for any help, I thought of changing it last summer and with the trade in prices being offered it will cost half what the cars worth to replace the SBC module!!!

I've had this message and am absolute s**ting it.
I purchased the w211 E320cdi approx 3 months ago and sorted lots of probelms. It has cost me £1600 to date, gearbox issues, rear boot lock soft close etc etc etc......now the sbc message has come up (not in red). It says service brakes.
I took it to a very reputeable local MB specialist who I am good friends with and the cost is going to be £1100-1300.
I'm too scared to take it to MB. My local one is Greenoak Slough.
Someone told me they no longer contribute.
What should I do, I'm now at the end of my teather and not sure if I should drive the kids around in the car.
Help.

Welcome to my world
: my SL cost me, on average, around £6K a year to run - that's just to keep it running, not petrol, tax or insurance, and that was even with me doing stuff like discs and pads, own filters before servicing, refurbing balljoints on front struts instead of replacing etc.Aidayboy said:
Murray, thanks again, sent you a PM
GOOD NEWS, it's been approved, so you wont have to pay anything. as long as on SBC unit show's it needs to be replaced when the MB dealer carrys out a short test.
it should show a damage code on the print out which starts "43"
if it shows a different damage code then you might get a different decision.
