C63 AMG Estate Performance Pack: 1st Impressions

It was with some sadness that I waved my last Audi off on its way, replaced as it is by a car as sensible as a 38DD breast implant: The utterly ridiculous Mercedes C63 AMG estate, with the even more absurd performance pack, taking it to a top heavy 487BHP.This is a car that has no place in modern Britain.Despite the badge stating “6.3 AMG” on the wing, it is in fact impelled along by a normally aspirated 6.2litre V8 engine.This would not look out of place in either a power boat or a supercar, but has on this occasion been put in a mid-sized estate car.The result isn’t exactly in Toyota Prius territory when it comes to cozying up to the low emissions zeitgeist.Notwithstanding its lack of Green credentials, it is further dynamically handicapped by having “upgraded”suspension.Upgrade in this context means worsened.It is simply too firm for Britain’s dishevelled roads and will jolt and bump you a bit like a Morgan with a live rear axle.The Morgan of course has the excuse of being designed by people who died in the last century.Mercedes and AMG sell this harsh set up to the tiny fraction of people for whom and extra 35BHP over the standard C63 AMG is sufficient compensation for a life of numb bum cheeks and spinal deformity. Presumably these are people who need to get their rubbish to the tip really, really fast, or whose dogs have expressed an interest in track days.“What’s that Lassy, you want to go to the Nurburgring?”

I used much the same logic as you when I bought my little SL500: one day soon a 5L V8 will be banned, so best get in now. I gave a mate of mine a ride in it and the effect was profound. Next time he took his C220CDi in for a service, he came away having test driven and bought a C63!

Unfortunately it was stolen, but now he's in a 911. I've got a lot to answer for!

Nice review....Clearly a fan of JC! I went for standard suspension and 18s and the ride is positively luxurious compared to my last BMW on runflats!

Great review, I so want a C63 like yours, but had to stick with my C350 whilst the insurance is still at silly prices after living outside of the UK for too long - grrrr.
