W210 and no rust!
Discussion
Here's another apparently nice one. My mechanic says that for some reason some w210s don't rust. This one looks impeccably tidy and has everything one might need, nothing one does not.

I've got a 210 estate, with the 2.6 engine as well. There were tiny bit's of rust on it when I got it - cleaned up as part of the deal. Some don't rust - I've heard that it depends on where they were built - not sure I buy it. It does seem to be random though I wonder whether some of the paint options are they key. I guess some paints are not water based, or less water based? - seemingly the cause of the problem.
I actually prefer the W210 to the last W124 I had - that really was rusty. A good W210 is a proper bargain. I got mine as a temporary measure whilst looking awaiting a new 124 or 123 but I'll keep it. It's excellent and it has been a bit of a revelation - every option except a sunroof... Decent stereo as well.
I got 30MPG out of it the other day driving from Hereford to Buckinghamshire on A'/B' roads.
What I'd really like is an E430 on Elegance suspension.

I agree with W124: a proper 210 is a bargain. Whereas a mint 210 is about £2,500, a mint 124 is £4,000-plus and all things being equal the 210 inevitably is a better car. The 210 certainly is much, much quieter. I also agree that an E430 Elegance would be quite a nice thing to run all day long. I suspect it would give 26mpg without too much bother.
Had the oils changed today and by all accounts they were well past their best (72k with FSH). G box is a bit smoother and the power steering feels better weighted as well. Keep wondering when something will rear its head being one of the chepest cars ive brought but it keeps getting better TBH, smooth, very quiet and looks nice in the car park. Even out dragged a small deisel away from the lights... LOL!

Is it me, or do a lot of the rust-free examples appear to be silver?
Funny you should say that. I saw a silver R reg E320 saloon this week in Waitrose car park and it was immaculate. Not a spot of rust, low mileage, same premium brand tyres, obviously looked after.I imagine there's probably 1 decent one for every 200 shockers.

I know the 210 gets a bad press but I love mine. It's a 220 cdi, the lowest of the low, but mid 50's to the gallon when cruising and small wheels with squidgy tyres for a lovely ride makes it a very comfy drive. At it's present rate of corrosion I reckon it'll be knackered in about 20 years, but I'll have snuffed it by then.

my e300TD started to rust around front wheel archs after 4 years - an off the record comment by my local MB dealership at the time said it was due to poor quality steel used from china.
I've heard it blamed on the water based paint they started using around that time, which probably didn't help either.Gassing Station | Mercedes | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
