SLK230 DIY Pulley Upgrade.....Is it possible!

Good morning gentlemen,

I am just about to purchase an SLK230 2002 and am keen to replace the pulley system to get an increase in BHP. I change my brakes and have done the odd head gasket and water pump in the past, so my question is, can a DIY guy change the pulley system. I dont have specialist tools, just my garage and the normal things us guys collect over 40 years. Is it worth attempting it or will it likely lead to a bigger problem. Also has anyone ran a post on this subject and are there any links with pictures, videos etc detailing the steps I would have to take.

Very straightforward, but expensive compared to the power gains you can expect. A pully kit plus remap will give you about +30 bhp. I'd just buy a more powerful engined model such as the 320 or AMG SLK32. You will find all the info you need by googling the various Mercedes forums such as www.mbclub.co.uk.

Thanks for the suggestion...I hadnt thought of that, but as I havnt yet fully parted with the cash, you might be right. I will have a look at both models you suggested and the attached sites.

Changing the pulley would also require a remap I believe ( certainly was the case with my slk 32). Given the price of these models now I would recommend seeking out either the 320 or 32 as the cost for pulley upgrade is circa 2k and on the 230 will not produce a massive increase. I started out with a 230 but found the 4 pot a bit coarse

I think you are right so have started actively looking for an SLK320. What can I realistically get for about £3,500. I have viewed a number of cars over the weekend all around £4000 and over, but they are covered in stone chips, full of dogs hair, bad resprays etc. I wouldnt pay more than £2000 for these cars as just new tyres all round, breaks and discs and a service will cost about £1000. A lot of the cars have signs of rust as well, how much will I have to pay for a sound SLK320 with no rust and which doesnt need £1000 spent on it.

Ps Any idea how much a basic respray would cost, with no welding required, a two pack paint.
