What's to know? I'm familiar with 126's (ish...owned two) but not with early stuff.

I'm guessing rot will be the big thing? assuming engine is bulletproof as per all M117's!

Do they rot anywhere in particular like their later cousins do?

They rot on the front bulkhead behind the front wheels where there's a major suspension componant mounted, not terminal but expensive. Other than that, they rot all over the place as usual. The earlier fuel injection distributors fail and fill the intakes with fuel which gets into the engine quite happily and does loads of damage if not spotted. Try and get the later version.

Cheers for that!

Spotted a 78 car, would that have the "self borking" fuel injection? It's on about 200k so hopefully anything nasty (rot aside) has been and gone!

Once they are running right and in good fettle are they reasonable tough? not too fragile?

My Dad had one about 20 years ago which I drove quite a lot. The way the needle used to sweep round that great big speedo at three figure speeds was pure comedy. It felt as solid as a rock when it was doing it too. Oh and velour, lots of it! hehe

To be honest I can't remember which way round it is (embarressed smiley face!) I think it's a rare fault and only if it's been stood a while. I had an "S" reg one and that did it and I pulled the distributer from another car and one had a steel slide in the middle and the other had an alloy one, seem to remember it was the alloy one that was borked?

Another favourite place for rust on them is at the rear of the cills on the inside and it's a bit of a bugger to get at ( cut the outer cill away, repair and then replace the outer cill) and so is often bodged.

Other than that, steering boxes. Loads of them are not adjusted properly and you end up with loads of slop - actually dead easy to repair and costs nothing, you just need to do it "right"! Ask if needed.

Also there are loads of ball joints in the steering, drag links and all sorts, make sure they are okay before you try to correct the steering box.

Handbrakes are another favourite to fail/pack up as they are drums inside the rear discs. Rarely adjusted properly ( most people leave them in park) and often seize due to lack of use.

1978 should have the later fuel injection. It's the difference between D-Jetronic and K-Jetronic, I believe.

I have ridden in a perfect 450 SE L with only 13,000miles on. It is the silver blue metallic car that Ironside sold a couple of years ago. What is there to say, other than that it was surprisingly crisp, fast and competent.
