How are these? They look good value for money nowadays and you can get examples with about 50K for less than 10k from MB dealers.
I am tempted. My SLK 350 is too hard on my back for daily use with the state of our roads these days.
What is the real world economy and running costs on these?

I'd expect day-to-day fuel consumption of 35mpg with mixed driving. A friend had a C Class estate with that lump and he was averaging that.

E220 is the best engine and 5 speed gearbox combo. 
(The V6 had issues with the electrics and 7 speed gearbox.)
In fact they are quiter than the new W212 E class's.
I've just sold my 07 E220 Avantgarde after 460k miles.
(£3600 part ex!)
No issues in all that time apart from a leaking injector but I never bothered fixing it. (£300 per injector.)
I averaged 45mpg and got as much as 53mpg on a run.
Look out for snapped road springs, water pump failure - you can hear them as the bearings go so give it a jiggle for movement, wheel bearing noise, and clocking!
These cars are prone to it because they're favoured by chauffeurs. If you buy one with less than 50k and it's had more than two owners I'd walk away!
Saying that if you get a 50k example you won't have any issues for at least another 50k anyway.
Make sure it's had OEM Mercedes parts and FSH.
Doesn't come standard with much so heated seats, parking sensors, sat nav, are all extras.
Try and go for the Avantgarde with black interior and dark maple wood.
(Incidentally that honest john report shows an 06 facelift. I've never seen one on an 06 as I'm pretty sure they came out 56.)
