C Service, can anyone clarify

My E320 Cdi has just come up requesting a 'C' Service - clever things these Mercs, and appear marginally more intelligent than some main dealers!

The car is a W211 2008 facelift estate model with 66,000 miles, I suspect it needs a major service plus filters etc, I had both air filters replaced (K&N) as part of trying to enhance fuel consumption so don't need that, auto transmission oil changed c 20,000 miles ago and otherwise I am not aware of any additional parts required.

The quotes I have had from two dealers vary massively - from £320 to £542, can anyone clarify what is a 'C' service and how much it should be, I am getting confused and concerned that figures appear to be being plucked from the air!

I know the arguments for having an independent service it but want to ensure all updates etc are done at this stage and have not found an indy which I trust around Coventry, South Warwickshire.

Mercedes service assyst uses letters A-G to indicate the amount of time the service is likely to take. It is based on mileage,time and style of driving. There is basically two types of service, A- Oil and filter change, and B- normal service. A is one hour, B is two hours C,D,E,F,G adds an hour each. When the Mecedes Star diagnostic system is plugged in ,it will indicate what additional work is required. In my case the onboard computer was told when the 16 spark plugs were changed four years ago. Hence now the warning on the dash is allowing three hours labour at the next service to change them. However I did them myself, and the mechanic will note this when he reads the codes on the Star machine. You can decide if the work is required. A + symbol next to the letter indicates that the brake sensor has activated. Make sure the garages quoting you have Star diagnostics. They will be quoting you for a B service, plus lots of additional checks, and if that work needs doing will cost extra. From 2007 onwards I believe Assyst+ just uses A and B service warnings.
