E55 CL(K)55 AMG - Things to be aware of
Discussion
I am upgrading the M3 as I no longer need 2 cars because I can now walk to work and theres a pool car I can use when travelling to client sites.
I wanted a Cayman but have recently found out we have a baby on the way so going to need 4 seats. Thinking about the 5.5 AMG engine and have roughly 11k to spend. Not decided which body type I like best, I am leaning towards the CL55, the supercharged version of course. However somehow the E class looks better.
Anyway, just looking for tips - things to look out for, running costs, opinions etc.

Awesome cars.
I have nothing concrete to back this up, but the CL seems to be a bit better screwed together and less prone to niggly faults (although ABC pumps are often still an issue), considerin they were both built during the period where MB didn't exactly shower themselves in glory. If 500 BHP isn't enough, you can also re-map and be pushing 600 BHP! The 600 Bi-Turbo apparently feels even quicker than the AMG, but obviously has a totally different character, although equally intoxicating in its own way. Happy hunting, do report back when you get one.

Thanks, something about the CL that makes it look out of proportion for some reason hence leaning towards the E class. However the main worry for me is rust, I f
king hate it!
Do we think these are towards the bottom of the depreciation curve now, I only keep cars for a year or so anyway.
On the Bi-Turbos do they sound as good? I imagine the turbos dampen the engine sound quite a bit?

I agree that the CL does look a bit awkward from some angles, yet great from others. They are obviously close to the bottom of the depreciation curve, although they will continue to drift downwards for a few years yet. The V12 is the polar opposite to the V8. The whole thing about the V12 is how quiet it is, an absolute iron fist in a velvet glove. You can of course make them louder and many have, but personally I don't feel it's appropriate for that variant.
You mentioned rust.
I have recently bought my first Mercedes - a SLK 55 AMG - so I have no actual experience to offer you.
The seller (having had many over the years...?) was keen to ensure I had car serviced by Mercedes, to keep the 10 year rust warranty valid.
Doing a google search - there seems to be mixed opinions as to whether this rust warranty is to be relied upon or not.

On a positive - my car is rust free :-)
