No long life Mercedes Service?

Had my W204 C350 Estate for nearly a year and the service reminder has appeared. I presume this is based on time as I have only driven 4K miles. How come Mercedes don't offer a long life service as both BMW (on my old 330xi) and VW (on my old R32) did one based on 2 years or mileage?

When speaking to the mechanic in Switzerland on my Golf R32 he said it was just a waste changing the oil every year as oil is so refined and engines so good there is no need, we would be just throwing away good oil (plus they didn't like the environmental impact!)

Nope every 12 months or approx 15k miles.

Mercedes used to be variable about 5 years ago but it was changed back to a fixed regime to make budgeting for maintenance easier.
