Fuel cap door on SL500 (03) not opening

Hi

Just asking for a mate really, the door to his fuel cap on his Sl500 (2003) refuses to open.

Is this a common problem?
Is there a manual release for it so at least he can actually put fuel in it and somewhat enjoy the weather?
Expensive problem?

Firstly the key must be out of the ignition, then pop the flap open in the usual way [small thump to the flap nearest the rear of the car].
If it will not open, you have a central locking problem, or possibly the catch has broken.
there is no secondary pull cord having looked in my SL manual.
This for a 230 model.

Shouldn't be, not if it is just a vacuum element gone, although they tend to fail unlocked.
