Unless you have really young children with no legs, take the 2+2 thing with a pinch of salt laugh

R129, pre 2002, had mini seats and lapbelts in the back, with next to no leg room. R230, 2002 onwards, replaced these with storage bins.

R107 was available with rear seats, too.

The rear seats of the R129 are ideal for small people aged between 4 and about 12 . I`ve had mine fitted with three point belts in the rear and posted some pictures on here a while ago about how it was done. My boys have never complained about the leg room; picking bugs out of your teeth is more of an immediate priority....

I`ve got rear "seats"? on my SL and I`ve never understood why Mercedes go to all that effort and expense to fit them.I don`t think I would consider having anyone behind me,especially with the standard lap belt. Also what about the auto roll bar shooting up in a crash? I had a white van man run into my rear and I think the roll bar would have seriously injured a rear passenger when it deployed.

RTFM. You will find that when using the rear seats you must put the roll bar up. Which is pretty fking obvious if you think about it.

One Saturday night in another universe, many years ago, I once had three females in the back of mine. I'm not sure it was safe but it was a good night.

Always manually deploy the roll bar before setting off with passengers!

The roll bar can pop up when all four wheels leave the ground during enthusiastic driving. Not that I would advocate this with children in the back, but it`s important to heed the safety advice provided by Mercedes.

The excellent quickfitSBS team fitted three point belts to the rear seats of my R107, they work well for my two boys 1 & 3 with stage 1-2-3 childseats which have a booster + back which hinges adapting well the space and seat angle restriction.
With baby 3 due in Oct we need to make the most of it this summer.

I consider myself chastised and a prat,I forgot there is a switch.
By the way r129 they must have been nice petite lady`s and I can think of more comfortable places to entertain them.

On the R129, there was a factory option for a flat luggage platform, with two electrically locking storage bins beneath, instead of the small rear seats. I have that option on my '99 SL500, and I had it on the SL320 I had before that.

At the time I ordered the SL320, the 'delete rear seats' option was on the UK price list. When I ordered the SL500 there was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing with the factory as to whether the option was still orderable.

I'm sorry for being short, it was inexcusable of me. It's just that the question comes up quite often and you get all these bar room naysayers pontificating about what a death trap that roll bar is. If you think about it, it's no surprise that Mercedes already thought about it. I suppose the total crapness of the rear seats means that there has never actually been a roll bar decapitation incident since only about three people have ever travelled more than 500yds in the back. The other great complaint is about the absence of a three pointed belt in the rear. Again, they thought about it. Like it or not, the backside of the front seat is intended to restrain any rear seat passenger. Because space is so confined, there is no opportunity for the rear seat passenger's head/body to build up any speed/momentum in a crash and because the front seat is big and soft, it does a better job of restraining the body and head than a seat belt would!

Hello,

My local specialist fitted the belts to mine, and prior to doing so rang quickfitbs who supplied the belts. They were really helpful apparently.

The fitting involved removing rah rear wheels and wheel arch liners, and cutting an aperture in the rear bulkhead (which then needs trimming to avoid the belts rubbing.

The top mount is a suitable bolt through the top of the wheel arch. This sounds all a bit home-made, but the installation looks really neat.

When completed, plenty of wax oil, replace the liners and pop the wheels back on!
