My missus has just bought a 1997 SLK 230.

Can anyone please recommend a good insurer - especially for a newly-qualifying 'classic'?

Thanks!

I tried to get a 97 SL on classic ins but my insurer wasn't keen. Direct line however were only £159 on a 5000 mile policy.

OP - you haven't qualified if this is your wife's sole car or a sunny day ''classic'' - and what no claims exist.

My SLK is a second car and all no claims discount existed on the main car (itself even older). And when I got it the car was only 12 so classic status was borderline.

I went with Peter Best (and you get a discount for being an MB Owners member). By far the cheapest option three years ago and I've stuck with it since - under £300 from memory as they were the only one's wishing to treat it as a classic. Now I have some no claims on this second policy other companies may start to come in cheaper.

(I have also this week renewed both my other car and Mrs Mercs Jazz - Churchill - the renewals were £520 for the pair but I did online quotes which they then price matched for £370 for the pair including £50 of legal add on extras - proving again that loyal cuctomers get ripped off. Also both final prices were identical - despite the original renewals being £75 apart - the Jazz being much more expensive the the old Merc S124 - I think final prices ended up as ''minimum'' premium)

Thanks for your thoughts, guys. Yes, she's being a little vague. It's only going to be a car for high days and holidays at first but I think it will become the daily driver once she realises how dull her mini is!
