350 Diesel engine recall?
Discussion
My 350 diesel engined 4x4 has been recalled. Apparently the oil had to be checked for metal and when non was found they told me step 2 had to be implemented and are now fitting new shells!
This means engine and box out and considering the car is just 2 years old and has done literally 5,500 miles, it was a hell of a shock.
This is a MB recall and wondered if anyone has similar experience or has more knowledge.

My 62 350ML bluetec has been recalled twice now for a check of "floor mats". I always get suspicious that they are telling you this when in fact its something more serious!
My car is getting serviced on Friday. I will ask when in the MB garage.
Will be good to hear if others have had similar recalls to us.......

I friend of mine worked for BMW. He said it wasn't unusual for a recall to be issued for insignificant reasons such as this, merely to get people through the door. The 'work' would be done while you wait, so the customer would browse the available stock. If one person in a hundred bought something, it was considered a result. This topic is probably of interest to you ....

It relates to 350-Bluetec powered G-wagons in Australia.
From what I read, it seems they check for the amount of sludge in the sump and, if it is beyond a certain amount, replace the bearings and fit a bigger sump to push oil capacity from 9l to 14l. In some cases, the engine is replaced.
The last post is interesting as it summarises the work and shows some photos of the work.

This may not be the same issue, but MB found a fault with a G55 AMG at its first service. The oil had gone like paste, which indicated it had overheated. The result was a a new, larger sump and oil cooling design which took too long and the car was rejected. The issue was the engine design to fit the G Wagon. The engine had no issues in other classes, nor does the 350 engine in the C or E etc...
Car still in bits as parts on order and still not received at Dealership. Nobody knows when I will get it back.
Complained to MB UK and was made to feel like I was inconveniencing their otherwise trouble free day. What a way to treat customers that have spend a considerable amount on a car.
Am writing to MD to complain, good job all my calls have been recorded, I think he will be shocked at the dismissive manner of his staff towards this matter.
Last MB I will ever buy!

I wondered if MB wrote to you direct or this was picked up as part of routine servicing, we have a 12/12 G350 thats done about 13,000 miles
Car was in for its 2 yr service and this was dropped on us at that time. I had no idea that such extreme measures would be carried out. PM me as more than happy to discuss. MB attitude is disgraceful IMO and to date they have been dismissive - MB UK that is.
When you have a £92k car it is simply not acceptable.
Last MB we will ever buy.
I'm running a 12 plate g350 and not heard anything. I called MB today and they checked for o/s recalls on their system and said nothing due.
I'm due a service in a few weeks at about 16k so will ask again when I take it in.
On the subject a question for other owners of these lovely trucks. If you drive down a steep hill at about 40 mph and lift off the throttle does your car change down a gear or two and rev harder as if trying to hold speed? Mine does and seems weird to me but wondered if it was a g thing ?

Ask them if there are any recalls due to metal in oil? Think a few have had engine failures when extreme off roading. I believe that only certain cars are involved, hopefully yours isn't one of them. I'm due a service in a few weeks at about 16k so will ask again when I take it in.

Can't comment on gears as car never tested under these conditions. Does however seem to clank into 1st gear when stopping at say lights. Is this a trait?

The A/T behaviour is typical of modern shift schedules - the assumption being that if you've lifted off and the car continues to increase speed (or maybe anyway in anticipation as it's detected you're on a slope), then you probably didn't want to and would rather keep more control. You'll probably find if you touch the accelerator, it'll shift up again. I'm due a service in a few weeks at about 16k so will ask again when I take it in.

Hi Tony
Read your posting on the G-Wagon, a complete mirror image of what I'm going through, car went in for a service 1st Oct with no indication of when I'd get it back, the car is now finished with new bearings and I'm not happy about it because I've heard of other cars with new engines.
For this reason I haven't taken the car back until I know what the guarentee is and what the settlement will be for the inconvinience. My car is the same age / millage as yours.

For all those that may be affected, just make sure that the dealers have the parts in stock.
Still haven't got mine back yet as parts not available - how's that for customer service.....
Good advice, but if a dealer had stock, why isn't yours fixed ? I would reject the car due to the time taken.Still haven't got mine back yet as parts not available - how's that for customer service.....
